Happy to welcome back David J. Goodwin to talk about , his work, life, and 1920s visit to King Manor!
What a wonderful presentation from this rainy afternoon. George is a puppeteer and creator of “Jupiter Washington, Carpenter,” a short film depicting the life of an enslaved person named Jupiter (he is a blend of several actual experiences/people), who was enslaved by George Washington. A beautiful intersection of history and narrative in an art form that has been with us for centuries!
☔️Today’s heavy rain and flooding is a good opportunity to think about our waterways and infrastructure. Our current exhibit, Streamline, combines historic artifacts and local art to tell this story. It’s on through the rest of the year so please make a plan to see it on a drier day! We are closed this weekend — stay safe everyone!!

More about Joey:
Later in life, Joey became more politically active. He joined Artists Against Apartheid in 1985 which was in opposition to artists performing at Sun City, a resort in Bophuthatswana which was an internationally unrecognized state created by the South African government to forcibly relocate its black population. This same year, Joey wrote “Bonzo Goes to Bitburg,” a protest song about U.S. President Ronald Reagan’s visit to a West German cemetery where 49 members of the N*zi SS were buried. Joey was a Jewish man, and this visit struck a nerve.

Big birthday today! Founding father and early anti-slavery advocate Rufus King was born on this day in 1755 in Massachusetts (now Maine). This Aries King (pun slightly intended) fought tirelessly to end slavery in the United States, back when it was rare of a founding father to do so. Celebrate his legacy today through community giving, support for antiracist organizations, and those working to end exploitative labor practices here and abroad.
A big thank you to Tools & Tiaras Inc for leading this amazing workshop 💜💜💜
