Neal Shoemaker started Harlem Heritage Tours in 1998 with the intention of exposing the truth about the culture of Harlem. The seeds of change had been planted decades before, but it seemed that during the late 1990's is when change started to become visible in the form of constant construction along blocks in Harlem that were long neglected. It was at this time that Harlem Heritage Tours was born

#misterharlem at the former Harlem address of Philip and Maggie Payton, many consider Philip Payton to be the Father of Black Harlem, I see they are doing some cosmetic work on the facade of his former Harlem address, it would be wonderful if the work reflected the heritage of Philip Payton, the workers have just come back from lunch I gotta have a talk with them.

Friends from Louisiana with us at the Harlem Heritage Tourism and Cultural Center, they love the legacy of Marvin Gaye. Moms holding the pic told us amazing stories about What it was like when the “What’s Going On” album came out in May 1971.

Women on the left lower corner left Louisiana 50 years ago to come to NYC/Harlem around the time of the release the album, terrific stories told by her, she has been living in Harlem for the past 50 years, I could listen to them tell stories all day. #misterharlem #harlemtours #harlemstorefronttheater #

Friends in from Boston recently shared stories of what like as college students in Boston during the 1960’s, especially April 4th 1968, the night Dr. King was killed. James Brown was scheduled to perform at the Boston Garden that night, but the concert was canceled, tempers were flaring in the city, and things were about to get out of hand, James Brown agreed to do concert the following night at the Boston Garden. The gentleman told me he thinks if not for that concert the city would have gone up in flames. I had never heard this story before, therefore I researched it and sure enough, I found information pertaining to the momentous event. I had so much fun being with these two, I hated to see them leave #misterharlem

Philip Payton: The Father of Black Harlem
Book Talk
Wednesday, July 14, 2021, 6:30pm
Harlem Heritage Tourism & Cultural Center,
104 Malcolm X Blvd, Harlem and online*

Kevin McGruder, Ph.D., Associate Professor of History at Antioch College, (Yellow Springs, OH), and former co-owner of Harlemade Styleshop (118th St. & Malcolm X Blvd, 2000-2008), will discuss his new book. In 1904, Philip Payton (1876-1917) incorporated the Afro-American Realty Company with a goal of providing Black New Yorkers with access to better housing in predominantly White Harlem. Over the next thirteen years he would become nationally known as a member of Booker T. Washington’s inner circle, but he would also meet fierce criticism, initially from White Harlemites seeking to prevent Black people from moving beyond Harlem’s Little Africa enclave (135th Street area), and eventually from some Black renters because of the higher rents he charged them.
