Ground Floor Gallery

Ground Floor Gallery Ground Floor Gallery connects local artists to new audiences through inviting exhibitions of original art for all New Yorkers.

The gallery seeks to empower the general public by educating them about contemporary art practice, hosting artist salons and other events, and encouraging conversations between local residents and the artists-in-residence in the gallery throughout the exhibition season. Ultimately, the gallery’s intent is for everyone from the art lover to the art novice to get to know the person and the story behind the work in a warm and inviting setting.

In January 2017, Authorized to Work in the US Press produced a stunning collection of original prints from our gallery space. Conceived as the artist residency “Drums on Paper,” by ATWUP founder, Cem Kocyildirim, this collaboration helped us kick off the New Year by inviting 17 artists to create 17 new prints on-site.

We’ve featured photos from Cem’s studio space in Industry City to illustrate how we designed a comparable set-up: printing drum and all! - for the gallery during their stay. We’ve also included a selection of the poignant, timely, and dynamic prints created by some of the participating artists.

Ben Cowan * Sy Abudu * AM DeBrincat * Sonny Ross * Michael J. Hildebrand * Gabriel Garcia Roman * Derrick Schultz * Cem Kocyildirim

Thank you for an unforgettable partnership!

Many congratulations to artist and poet extraordinaire, JoAnne McFarland (seen here in the bottom left corner), one of only 12 National Arts Club Fellows! This well-deserved honor acknowledges JoAnne’s enormous contribution to the Gowanus art community she has helped nurture over the years in addition to her impact on the Brooklyn and greater New York City art world and beyond.

We’ve worked with JoAnne on several occasions since meeting her in the early years of our gallery and hosted a reading of her poetry at our space in tandem with our 5th Annual Gowanus Open Studios exhibition, “Duty Free,” in 2017.

We are so thrilled for her and can’t wait to see what she does next!

We are excited to be working with artist Linda Colletta again! We last worked with Linda in April 2020 for our online exhibition, “Deep Blue See,” in partnership with Prevent Child Abuse America.

Now, we’re working closely with the artist and her studio on a residential commission employing one of the artist’s signature motifs as seen here in “Periwinkle IV,” 2021. Stay tuned for more about this project and the process as our collaboration unfolds!

Happy New Year, friends!

It’s been a while so we thought we’d check in with this 2021 highlight:

The acquisition and installation of artist Ed Grant’s, “Anima,” for a new building in Taichung, Taiwan! Kudos again to Ed on this well-deserved honor and thank you to the Art Povague team on this stunning collaboration.

You can see available work by Ed Grant on our page and support his “Daily Project” fundraiser .

It’s the last week to see artist Rhia Hurt’s installation, “Truth, Beauty, Freedom, Love” at The Painting Center in Chelsea. Rhia’s nuanced color blends, bodily forms, and graceful drips and trails carry the eye on an inescapable journey that practically leaps off the wall.

In June of 2019, we presented Rhia’s debut solo gallery show in NYC, “Seeing Through,” which illuminated her quest for balance through chance, trial and error. Reconnecting with Hurt this summer and experiencing her new work has been a treat, to say the least. We miss her in New York City but are equally as thrilled to see the work coming out of her California studio!

“I grew up in cowboy country—independence and rugged individualism are American myths that hold strong in the cultural heritage of my homeland. As a woman, I am looking for ways to reclaim these spaces for myself outside of the male dominated narrative of The West. I want to
investigate the landscape on my own terms and recall the magic for myself. I am interested in the visual nuances that create the culture and myth of this landscape.”

In his exhibition, “The American Treasure Map,” Hinojosa explores American culture through his lens as a first-born child of Peruvian parents. He uses found objects as tools to play with in the studio, which, in turn, has changed the way he looks at his own trash and the trash around him.

Hinojosa creates elaborate pieces constructed from found objects. His work “challenges greed, obsessive consumption, and the social stratification of American culture” according to Hinojosa, who uses fabric, postcards, found jewelry and more in this specific piece titled “True Love”.

“This postcard series relates to my practice because its process lies with elements created by a union of craft and technology. Aesthetically and technically each work embodies both a sense of control/rigidity as well as a more gestural/chaotic quality in the looseness of the ink application. The final texts are drawn from an ongoing personal collection which is similar to other pieces/or series that are frequently found in my work.” —John Richey .richey on his process and practice.

So thrilled to have placed Joni Sterbach’s “Water Connection” in a new home here in Brooklyn!

Joni Sternbach uses large format cameras and early photographic processes to explore the present-day landscape and to make environmental portraits. Her work centers on our relationship with water. Her long-term projects involve the pursuit of understanding the American West and the series Surfland, which captures portraits of surfers in tintype.
