These drawings are executed in the Exquisite Corpse manner, in which the head, torso, and legs are drawn without knowledge of the previous panel, revealing the full figure only at the end. Ray Smith uses this Surrealist parlor game to morph Picasso's Guernica - a method he calls the "undoing of the undoing."

Ray Smith's Unguernica is on view at the gallery through May 28! Visit us to see an installation of works recently returned from the Fundación Picasso - Museo Casa Natal, amongst a recent sculpture and a selection of large-scale paintings. These "exquisite corpses" are shrapnel of Picasso's Guernica, sent back to us as a meditation and commentary.

Acclaimed New York-Based Artist Margaret Evangeline Insists on the Necessity of Community

"We need to be in a community of artists and visit each other and talk about our work. That is my advice to artists these days: find or build a community of artists. That is what will sustain you.”

- Margaret Evangeline, in an article by Jacqueline Bishop for HuffPost Arts & Culture

Maïmouna Guerresi’s Mystical Portraiture - The New Yorker

Join us tomorrow evening, 5:30-8 pm, for a reception and book signing to celebrate the opening of Maïmouna Guerresi: Sacred Dwellings, the artist's second showing of her work at our gallery.

Guerresi's book, Inner Constellations, will be available for purchase and signing by the artist. As featured recently in the The New Yorker:

After moving to Senegal and converting to Islam, the Italian photographer developed a style fed by the mysticism of Sufism and the experimental spirit of the Body Art movement.

Join us this evening from 8-10 pm for the Public Vernissage of VOLTA NY! Visit us at Booth D14 to enjoy a solo exhibition of Aaron Johnson's new "reverse-painted" and "sock-painted" works.

Johnsonʼs translucent-skinned figures are cavalier in their violence and sex, gleefully facing the temporality of life and death. Meanwhile, his sock caricatures are saucy, aggressive, puffed-up and confrontational; they wield pistols and feast, laughing as bullets fly.

A Conversation with Ronnie Landfield, by James McElhinney

"...So, without a word, Larry [Poons] picks up a five-gallon can of green paint, walks over to the purple painting and slams it! I was horrified. He looked at me and said, “You’re on to something kid.”

Voices in Contemporary Art's Winter 2016 issue of the VoCA Journal features a compelling interview with Ronnie Landfield by James McElhinney.

Gallery chronicle by James Panero - The New Criterion

"It might be hard today to imagine the alarm that Landfield’s illusionistic turn once posed to the supposed direction of modern art. Not only was he abandoning flat abstraction for deep space. He was also drawing his real vision from fictive imagination."

Ronnie Landfield featured in this month's The New Criterion Gallery Chronicle by James Panero.

Memories of War Surface in Visceral New Paintings by Eugene Lemay

"Their richly textured surfaces suggest an agitating force within their depths, reflecting the chaos of combat and its aftereffects—which, for Lemay, have resonated long after war’s end."

Artsy's Karen Kedmey on Eugene Lemay's solo exhibition, Building Absence - on view through October 31.

For his first solo show at New York’s Stux Gallery, artist Eugene Lemay (who is also founder and president of Mana Contemporary), continues to explore the themes that have occupied him for decades—war, memory, landscape, and language—in a range of new paintings. These darkly hued, emotive compositio…

Between Identities: Trauma and Ethics in the Art of Eugene Lemay

Eugene Lemay's solo exhibition, Building Absence: New Paintings, opens this evening! Join us from 5:30-8pm at the gallery; 24 W 57 St, 6 Fl.

"His monochromes may be based upon subtraction and removal but the viewer is not looking into the abyss. Instead, Lemay achieves through minimalism a sort of purity of visual intent." by Shai Baitel for HuffPost Arts & Culture.

His trajectory as an American Christian of Arab descent, who transformed into a Jew and then an Israeli who fights for his country, has certainly shaped Lemay as a complex individual with a variety of viewpoints relating to identity, of his own, and of the other.
