Photographers have never been afraid of heights.

Modernist photographers immediately recognized the skyscraper as a defining symbol of the new century and humanity’s reach upwards. As the Eiffel Tower, the Chrysler, and the Empire State set world records, artists climbed as high as the buildings themselves to show what progress looked like from above.

Stephen Shore’s Uncommon Places is now on view at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Shot across multiple road trips in North America between 1973 and 1981, the series helped establish colour photography as a serious art form. 

Shore photographed the parts of America most photographers weren’t bothering with: motel interiors, intersections, diners, and parking lots. His series created a portrait of a country through details. 

On view in Vancouver through July 19.

Valérie Belin is the subject of a solo exhibition at the Museu Picasso in Barcelona. A newly inducted member of the Académie des beaux-arts, Belin describes her style as a kind of “magical realism,” portraits that simultaneously hold their subjects as individuals, icons, and illusions.

Bremer photographs Golden Age paintings and historic botanical engravings, then paints and draws back into each print, his patterns in ink and acrylic ranging from meticulous to gestural. The works animate Golden Age themes of beauty, cultural exchange, and vanitas for the present.
