🌅 In August, MMNC returned to Sunrise Senior Living to share our “History of Navigation” program with the residents!

📖 This was a guided lesson in the history and technology of navigational tools, such as the sextant, compass, and quadrant, as well as a look into the journeys of three famous navigators.

🔎 Participants got an up close look at some of the navigational tools in the museum’s collection. They even got their very own compasses!

🏝️Happy National Beach Day!

As Staten Islanders, we’re lucky to be surrounded by beaches with such rich histories. Did you know that South Beach was once known as “The Riviera of New York City”? In the early 20th century, South Beach was advertised as “The Greatest of All Summer Resorts 30 Minutes Sail over New York Bay.”

Make sure to get out to the beach before summer is officially over!

☀️ Last week, we visited our friends at A Chance In Life () to share two of MMNC’s educational programs with their teen participants!

🆘 During the first program, students learned about the origin of Morse Code and how to use the Morse Code alphabet. The teens participated in a translation activity and even had the opportunity to type their name and hear it translated into Morse Code.

🧭 Our Famous Black Navigators program focused on a variety of individuals who made history through their accomplishments, some of whom flew planes and others who sailed, from the 17th century to the present. One of the navigators even had ties to Staten Island!

This Friday, March 12 is National Baked Scallop Day! Scallops are a type of Bivalve Mollusk that live in saltwater. Fun fact: Scallops use an adductor muscle that allows them to open and close. This muscle is actually the part we eat. The New Jersey Scallop Industry is a force to be reckoned with. In 2013, Scallops were NJ’s most important fisheries, valuing $65.3 million. As of 2019, New Jersey ranks second in the nation in Sea Scallops with a whopping 11 million pounds of them!

Tomorrow, September 26, is National Fishing Day. MMNC is proud to celebrate. Fishing has always been a big part of the maritime industry. People across the country enjoy fishing as a sport, recreational activity, food source and even just as a leisurely hobby. Marine vehicles such as boats or yachts are typically used for fishing. People also fish on boardwalks or piers as the one shown in the picture. 🎣🐟🐠

08/31/2020

National Radio Day was on August 20th. Radios are very important throughout many industries, including music, television, communication, news, sports and navigation. Although the radio was invented by Guglielmo Marconi in 1895, many scientists and engineers contributed to its development along the way. In fact, in 1892, Nikola Tesla (see historical narrative image for Nikola Tesla below) created a prototype for the radio that was used later by Marconi. Public radio broadcasting was invented by Lee deFrost in 1910; the first radio news program broadcasted on August 31, 1920; and the first online radio station, Radio HK, debuted in 1995. Also, during World War II, radios were used for what President Roosevelt called the Fireside Chats. He held radio chats to keep the nation updated on and help them get through the Great Depression and the War. To this day, the maritime industry uses radios on ships for communication and navigation. The radio that is used globally for communication between ships and the shore is called a VHF radio.

Recent sailing news:

1) Despite the unusual circumstances due to the pandemic, the Bayview Yacht Club still held its annual Bayview Mackinac Race on July 11. Race Chairman Chris Clark speaks on how it has changed this year, and what they have done differently in an interview about this competitive freshwater distance race. Although other Midwest sailing races, including the Newport Bermuda Race and the Chicago Mackinac Race, have been canceled because of COVID-19, Clark talks about how his team has prepared for this race and their efforts to make it as safe as possible. They have reduced the number of sailors and workers, shifted many of the documents and resources to online, and taken the necessary health precautions. To make the event possible, Clark advises everyone to be flexible, as his team has worked hard to plan the race.

2) Recently, it has been announced that the 2020 Aloha Classic is canceled due to this global pandemic. This was a measure taken as a precaution to protect people and slow the spread of the virus. There is an online challenge though that will still be going on as planned. There are no risks involved in proceeding with this challenge, as people can submit videos or images of themselves riding big waves from any location with the hashtag . Thankfully, this event can still continue despite this pandemic, and it is something many are looking forward to.

3) America’s Cup is the oldest trophy in international sporting history, as it began in 1851. It's formatted like a match race where teams compete with each other one on one. This year the cup is taking place in Auckland, New Zealand. Some recent news of the cup includes the American Magic embarking on a challenge to sail the Waitemata. American Magic, the New York Yacht Club’s America’s Cup team, became the first to sail on Waitemata Harbor. Their sailboat, the Defiant, docked at 10:40 am, right when the wind was in their favor. Although having not sailed for 5 months due to COVID-19, American Magic performed exceptionally well on the Harbor, thanks to the Defiant’s crew and the “wind gods” as Skipper Terry Hutchinson put it.

Recent sailing news:

1) A few weeks ago, Juan Manuel Ballestero arrived in Argentina after sailing for nearly 3 months alone to see his elderly father because travel by air was restricted in response to the outbreak of COVID-19. He took his Ohlson 29 sailboat, also known as the Skua, on this long voyage across the Atlantic Ocean and arrived just in time for Father’s Day. He did not let the pandemic and international travel restrictions prevent him from seeing his family. Along the way, he persevered through many challenges, but ultimately his sailing experience and determination helped him complete the journey and reach safely.

2) On July 23rd, plans to build a new Sailing Museum were released along with details of its location and design. The Sailing Museum is to be built in the Armory building in downtown Newport, Rhode Island. It will be filled with interactive exhibits that demonstrate the many aspects of sailing. Split into seven sections, the main hall of the museum will feature seven thematic areas: Wind & Water, The Making of a Champion (Mental), The Making of a Champion (Physical), Teamwork, Competition and Legends of Sailing. In each area, people are given the opportunity to learn about and experience that element of sailing.

3) Recently, the public began voting for the World Sailing 11th Hour Racing Sustainability Award. In the past, the winner was determined by a panel of judges who were experts on the subject. This year, the public is joining in as well. Past winners were selected because of their ideas on how to improve ocean conservation and preservation and this year will be no different. The winner receives a $10,000 prize and a trophy made of recycled carbon fiber infused with bio-resin.

This week's feature: the Museum of Maritime Navigation and Communication ⚓️

Founded by a marine service company that dealt with sales and service for the marine industry for over 30 years, the Museum of Maritime Navigation & Communication, located in Rosebank, is comprised of a historically significant collection of maritime navigation and communication equipment and has made in available in its exhibits. The exhibits and displays have a dual-focus: electronics and local maritime history. ☀️

Objects from the collection are shown with their purpose, function, and provenance described. While all of the equipment on display was previously installed on ships, an interactive exhibit helps visitors understand how each piece relates to their own everyday lives. An electronics-specific exhibit shows how technology has evolved over time with both enclosed and hands-on displays to help demonstrate each object’s functionality.

Although the museum is temporarily closed, you can learn ALL you need to know about this industry through their online collections & galleries by VISITing their website http://mmncny.org/ - you'll be glad you did! 🚢

**Help Support the Sailors' Snug Harbor Cemetery Memorial Campaign**

The Descendants of Sailors’ Snug Harbor Mariners have been reaching out to Historical and Genealogical Societies, Museums, Military Veterans Groups, and Concerned Citizens, to invite them to join a Letters of Support Campaign to support their efforts to gain access to the old Sailors’ Snug Harbor Cemetery on Staten Island, in New York City, to honor their Ancestors and all of the 6,500 Merchant and Naval Mariners interred there (1834-1976), by installing a Memorial Monument (Obelisk) and holding an annual Memorial Service. Some of the Mariners were famous Sea Captains and some sailed on famous Merchant and Naval ships dating back to the American Revolution. Many were just average seamen whom sailed and endured for many years on the sea under arduous conditions. The Mariners were from many areas of the United States, Canada, and foreign countries. https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/2244490/sailors-snug-harbor-cemetery

Sadly, the Sailors' Snug Harbor Cemetery is devoid of gravestones or markers, except for 15 remaining gravestones. The Cemetery is closed and not open to the public. The Board of Trustees of Sailors' Snug Harbor have rejected the Descendants' requests to access the SSH Cemetery to honor their Ancestors. https://nypost.com/2018/12/29/caretakers-shoot-down-plans-for-monument-for-fallen-sailors/

The Descendants are collecting Letters of Support to persuade the Trustees of Sailors’ Snug Harbor to change their decision. You can help support the Descendants by writing a Letter of Support using the Support Letter Writing Instructions at the following link: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1sZv5VFLNWw0HA-pW2i33RhbgVFQ6oExx

Sailors’ Snug Harbor has a very interesting history. It was one of the first large scale retirement facilities in the United States and the first established for Merchant Mariners. It was founded by the Randall family whom were New York City Merchant Sea Captains and Privateers during the French Indian War and Patriots during the Revolutionary War. Alexander Hamilton was a friend of the Randall family and their Attorney. He helped draft the Robert Richard Randall Will in 1801 to create the SSH Trust which funded the SSH Retirement Home. During its 140+ years of operation (1833-1976) approximately 16,000 Mariners resided there. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sailors%27_Snug_Harbor
