Introduction
Michael Sorkin and Sharon Zukin
THEIR ABSENCE IS INDELIBLE: the Twin 'Towers were landmarks, buildings you could not lose sight of no matter where you were. They told you which way to face when you wanted to walk downtown, were your first view of the city when driving in from New Jersey, and anchored the skyline when you were flying out of JFK. As you rode the D train over the East River into Manhattan after dark, they were fluorescent chessboards against the black night sky. Sometimes sinister, sometimes beautiful, sometimes just banal, they were icons of New York City -- the best-known buildings in the world, the Everest of our urban Himalayas.

BIG PLANS
Made for China

The design of cities in their all-at-once has become anathema, deplored as “utopian” (a concept itself, sadly, in bad odor), masculinist, authoritarian, etc., etc.

We disagree and think this discourse is vital, not only imaginatively but on the ground: every city has a point of departure, a set of governing ideas that limn the terms — however constricting or loose — for its development and maturation.

In light of explosive growth — by mid-century 70% of the world’s population will be urban — and of accelerating environmental disaster, it is only rational that new cities be a major part of the solution.

The attraction of China....

“Communities (have) to be created, fought for, tended like gardens.”
Barack Obama Dreams from My Father

Although the presidential library is now as natural a part of our national trove of civic rituals and commemorations as the pledge of allegiance, it is, like the pledge, a fairly new one. The first presidential library was FDR’s in Hyde Park, New York. Based on his own sketches, it opened in 1941, one year before the pledge was adopted by Congress and not long after the construction of the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials in Washington, DC.....

CCNY's Michael Sorkin is finalist in NYC innovative affordable housing competition | The City College of New York

For Sorkin, the synergy is strong between the project, his Urban Design leadership at CCNY and the Spitzer School of Architecture's mission: "The school in general is about New York City, about design committed to social justice—and one of the main crises that the city faces at the moment is housing affordability." And, he notes, "we're also a school that's committed to community-building, especially in our own neighborhood."

Hiding in plain sight in New York City are nearly two dozen potential solutions to the city's affordable housing shortage.

Michael Sorkin Studio’s proposal includes seven units in a 4,430-square-foot building with facade steps that create a terraced effect. It was selected because of “its ability to provide plentiful outdoor spaces that contribute to residents’ experience, its clever use of space, and its comprehensive use of sustainable features to minimize the building’s environmental footprint.”

#URWaterproofingNY suggests a more nuanced understanding of urban nature while challenging landscape architects, engineers, and policy makers to move beyond short-term pragmatic responses to extreme storms to engage a broader definition of everyday infrastructure.

Landscape architects have only begun to engage the space in between the scales of the swale and the floating city, reimagining the evolution of existing urban systems to foster a more robust and resilient future." — Thaïsa Way, ASLA, "Flooded with Ideas,"
