In celebration of Pride Month!

Although many ancient sculptures were painted and embellished, much of these decorations deteriorated with time, leaving the false impression that these sculptures and subjects were all white, but also that the aesthetic and cultural standards of beauty were based on whiteness. In this work, Lily Cox-Richard provides a technicolor response to this legacy, questioning the narrative and disrupting the legacy of oppression these objects have helped perpetuate.

Textile Tuesday: We love these late 19th and early 20th-century examples of American quilts and coverlets!

In the corner block of our first example, the prolific weaver Harry Tyler included his trademark eagle. In the 1840s, legend has it that Tyler’s son, a soldier, requested that he change his signature from a lion, which was associated with Englishness, to the more patriotic American eagle.

Jane Peterson was a woman with unshakeable purpose. A modest upbringing did not dissuade her from pursuing a career as an artist. She moved to New York from the Midwest to study at the Pratt Institute, supporting herself by teaching drawing. As a young woman, she defied convention for the times and traveled Europe and the Middle East in search of suitable subjects. At age 50 she settled down and got married. Having “made it,” she devoted the rest of her days to painting in her attic studio atop her Fifth Avenue townhouse, across the street from The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Charles Burchfield defies categorization but was certainly one of American’s foremost watercolorists. He called himself a “romantic realist” and was brilliant at capturing the mood and hidden essence of his surroundings.

Described as an independent “lone wolf,” George Bellows was one of America’s leading realists of the early 20th century. Talented and hard-working, he pursued his desire to capture authentic and unspoiled scenery. Bellows was an open-minded man and moved easily between traditional and liberal art organizations, even teaching at a few of them.

It’s American Art Week, so we’re celebrating some of America’s favorite artists f in our show The American Dream: Seven Decades of Reality and Imagination in American Art.

Reginald Marsh developed his own signature style by blending the Ashcan painters’ passion for recording urban life with a detailed study of human anatomy akin to that of the Renaissance masters. He preferred to capture decidedly plebian and often gritty scenes: burlesque houses, theaters, the Bowery, Coney Island, etc. In fact, early in his career Marsh supplemented his income by designing stage sets and painting curtains.
