The “sweetheart” motif was not pressed into the glass in the normal way but was produced by manipulating the glass after it was removed from the mold. The rarity of this process means that these perfume bottles are few and far between.

#inthestudio with @colinhunt03 who tediously mixes egg tempera to create his incredibly detailed and precise work.

Egg tempera technique, which dates back to the Byzantine era, uses egg yolk as the binding agent for pigments. The paint is then thinned with water, which allows the artist to layer transparent glazes until the desired hue and opacity is achieved.

It’s the final week to see “Marc Trujillo: Fast” at the Monterey Museum of Art! He and fellow H&A artist, David Ligare, visited the museum last week.

Trujillo paints from what he calls “the middle ground of common experience,” avoiding overt irony and fantasy. His scenes force us to look closely at the world around us, revealing truths that are often uncomfortable.

Colin Hunt’s debut solo show at Hirschl & Adler Modern, “So Much Remains to Be,” opens today!

Hunt merges figure and nature into a single identity by bending and inverting the landscape. In doing so, he creates portals that operate between the here and the hereafter and explores the universal human experiences of grief and memory.

Mary Cassatt produced a series of ten, labor-intensive color aquatint prints detailing the everyday life of a woman. Greatly influenced by the masters of printmaking, she seamlessly infused Japanese elements into her compositions. Note the long line of the back of the neck—a symbol of beauty and sensuality in many Asian cultures.

“Painting for me is a constant search to hold a feeling tangible.” Louisa Chase’s work is undeniably imbued with powerful emotion. The artist wrestled with the many complexities that make us human—desire, ambition, frustration, anger, happiness, fear—and channeled that energy into her bravura brushstrokes.

Magic Realist Ruth Ray was a woman before her time, juggling a career as an artist with family responsibilities before it was a common thing to do. Her mother was an early feminist who surely passed her beliefs to Ray. This painting is thought to reflect the artists’ own musings on the passage of time and the fleeting nature of beauty.

MacArthur “Genius” Elizabeth Turk is known for pushing marble to its limit. In her Script series she repurposed marble pedestals that once supported busts at the Getty. In giving new life to the stone, she explores the ideas of connectivity and interrelatedness. The process of carving marble is very much a give and take for Turk: she shapes the stone, but in return the stone changes her both physically and mentally.

In 1949 Honoré Sharrer was named “Woman Artist of the Year.” Today, we would simply recognize her as “Artist of the Year.” She was deliberately enigmatic, often inserting surprising objects to challenge the viewer. Sharrer was never devoid of an idea, keeping a file of “curiosities” full of photos, newspaper clippings, and torn magazine pages that served as constant inspiration.
