The Italian Cultural Foundation at Casa Belvedere celebrates everything Italian, including two special places in nearby Rosebank that honor our Italian culture in Staten Island. Take some time this summer to visit both!
The GARIBALDI-MEUCCI MUSEUM (420 Tompkins Ave.) was the home of inventor and candle maker Antonio Meucci. The Italian revolutionary and political leader Giuseppe Garibaldi also lived there from 1851 to 1853.
Nearby is the landmarked SHRINE TO OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL on the club grounds of the Mt. Carmel Society (36 Amity St.). The shrine is created from stones and shells collected from the shores of Staten Island, broken glass, donated statues, and lights. It's an amazing example of Italian American folk art.

Today is President Lincoln's birthday!

If you've ever been on a tour at the museum you've seen this piece in the Garibaldi Exhibit room and you know that General Garibaldi was asked by President Lincoln to fight on behalf of the Union during the Civil War. Although the great general did not get to see battle in this particular war, he did have the NY 39th Infantry Regiment named in his honor, the Garibaldi Guard.

After a 17-month hiatus due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum will reopen its doors to the public Wednesday, where visitors will be able to experience a number of never-before-viewed archived historical artifacts.

A tribute to “Women in World History” has been added to the Meucci exhibit room.

In anticipation of the arrival of the Tower of Venice, “Sights and Sounds of Venice,” a multimedia exhibit presented by talented artists, will be open for viewing until the last week of September.

Normal hours of operation remain the same: Wednesday through Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. with the last tour at 4:30 p.m.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE HISTORIC MUSEUM

The Garibaldi-Meucci Museum, formerly known as the Garibaldi Memorial, is a circa 1840 Gothic Revival cottage that was once home to inventor and candle maker Antonio Meucci, who is said to be the original inventor of the telephone.

During the 1850s, Gen. Giuseppe Garibaldi, an Italian revolutionary, fled his homeland and lived for a time with Meucci before returning to Italy to successfully fight for its independence.

The museum, maintained by the Order of the Sons of Italy, houses a schematic of Meucci’s teletrofono invention, as well as photographs, letters, some of Garibaldi’s medals and memorabilia relating to both Garibaldi and Meucci.

The landmarked site also hosts periodic lectures on Italian culture and history, Italian language classes and gallery displays.

The museum, whose mission is “Preserving the Past for the Future,” promotes an understanding of Italian-American heritage and presents a positive image of Italian-Americans. It conducts educational, cultural and artistic programming designed to eliminate ethnic and racial prejudice for a diverse and growing audience.

The Garibaldi-Meucci Museum is located at 420 Tompkins Ave. in Rosebank. For more information about events, programs or classes, visit www.garibaldimeuccimuseum.com or call 718-442-1608.

Our Story

The simple country residence was built circa 1840 in the Gothic revival style. In 1850, Meucci and his wife Ester learned of its availability and soon after began renting it. Shortly thereafter, Garibaldi arrived in New York seeking refuge. Meucci offered him the hospitality of his home and together they worked in his candle factory. Later, in 1854, Garibaldi returned to Italy leading military forces that would provide for the unification of Italy and would win him worldwide fame. When Garibaldi died in 1882, a committee formed to commemorate the hero's stay on these shores. In 1884, Meucci was on hand when a plaque was placed over the front door of the house. After Meucci's death, the house was turned over to the Italian Community to be preserved as a memorial to Garibaldi. In 1907, on the centennial of the hero's birth, the house was moved to its present location, and here a pantheon was erected over it. In 1919, the Garibaldi Society turned the house over to the Order Sons of Italy in America. The Order has restored and maintained the house ever since. With the assistance of the cultural department of the Italian Embassy, artifacts were collected from around the world. In May of 1956, the house was opened to the public and rededicated as The Garibaldi-Meucci Museum. Today, the museum is a National Landmark owned and operated by the Order Sons of Italy in America.
