James Sansum Fine and Decorative Art New York Art and Antiques Gallery
(1)

Founded in 2002, James Sansum Fine and Decorative Art is located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The gallery offers a diverse selection of American and European furniture and decorative objects, as well as Asian works of art and Old Master drawings, from the eighteenth through the twentieth century. In addition, we exhibit contemporary art and design, created by a select group of international painters, photographers and sculptors. James Sansum has been a fine art and antiques dealer for more than twenty years. He graduated from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in the History of Medieval Europe, and received a Master of Arts degree in the History of Decorative Arts and Design from Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and Parsons School of Design. He has written extensively on art and design, and has curated several critically acclaimed exhibitions on European boxes, textiles, and works on paper. With his extensive training and eye for the unusual, Sansum combines a scholarly background with a modern design sensibility to offer an array of truly exceptional pieces. The gallery and its collection have been included in such publications as Architectural Digest, Domino, Elle Decor, House Beautiful, House & Garden, Martha Stewart Living, The New York Times, Town & Country and Vogue.

WAVES
PHOTOGRAPHS BY NELSON HANCOCK
JUNE – AUGUST 2013

James Sansum Fine and Decorative Art is pleased to announce Waves, an exhibition of photographs by Nelson Hancock.

Part of an ongoing project, shot from beaches in California and Long Island, the work emphasizes specific moments by stripping away much of the surrounding detail. There is a monumental quality to the elements that remain.

Often shooting in twilight and fog, Hancock works with a hand-held vintage 4x5 inch camera equipped with an uncoated portrait lens from the 1920s. This combination of soft light and finicky equipment creates a distinctive palette and a gauzy quality, producing a painterly moodiness.

Nelson Hancock studied photography and anthropology at Princeton and received a doctorate in cultural anthropology from Columbia. He has taught for many years at Pratt Institute, where he directed the Critical and Visual Studies Program. Hancock lives and works in Brooklyn.
