WAVES
PHOTOGRAPHS BY NELSON HANCOCK
JUNE – AUGUST 2013
James Sansum Fine and Decorative Art is pleased to announce Waves, an exhibition of photographs by Nelson Hancock.
Part of an ongoing project, shot from beaches in California and Long Island, the work emphasizes specific moments by stripping away much of the surrounding detail. There is a monumental quality to the elements that remain.
Often shooting in twilight and fog, Hancock works with a hand-held vintage 4x5 inch camera equipped with an uncoated portrait lens from the 1920s. This combination of soft light and finicky equipment creates a distinctive palette and a gauzy quality, producing a painterly moodiness.
Nelson Hancock studied photography and anthropology at Princeton and received a doctorate in cultural anthropology from Columbia. He has taught for many years at Pratt Institute, where he directed the Critical and Visual Studies Program. Hancock lives and works in Brooklyn.
