Master Drawings New York 2025 began with a special opportunity to visit Princeton to explore the Princeton University Art Museum’s new building, which recently opened to the public on October 31, 2025. Laura Giles, Heather and Paul G. Haaga Jr., Class of 1970, Curator of Prints and Drawings, and Jun Nakamura, Assistant Curator of Prints and Drawings, welcomed visitors to the museum to tour their inaugural thematic exhibit, Face to Face and for a special viewing of highlights from the drawings collection in the study room.

More about the Face to Face exhibition:

Virtual face-to-face interactions have become as commonplace as in-person encounters. Prior to the advent of “moving pictures” in the late nineteenth century, the human face as a still, two-dimensional image was often rendered on paper as both unique and reproductive artworks, ranging from intimate sketches to large print editions. This collections-based exhibition focuses on the universal appeal of the human visage, both revealed and concealed. Depicted by artists across centuries, cultures, and continents and in a wide variety of media, the faces displayed in spatial conversation with each other provoke issues of identity, celebrity, and divinity while positing different modes of engagement, from gentle intimacy to emotional confrontation.

This event is organized by and in association with Master Drawings New York 2026.
Celebrating its 20th anniversary edition, Master Drawings New York is the premier U.S. art fair for drawings, featuring exceptional works on paper from all periods, as well as paintings, photographs, and sculpture presented by 36 international exhibitors on New York’s Upper East Side. The 2026 edition of the fair will take place 30 January - 7 February, 2026.

“In turning his attention away from subject matter of common experience, the poet or artist turns it upon the medium of his own craft. The nonrepresentational or “abstract,” if it is to have an aesthetic validity, cannot be arbitrary and accidental, but must stem from obedience to some worthy constraint or original.” -Clement Greenburg, Arts and Culture: Critical Essays

Abstract art doesn’t reject reality, but develops a deeper dialogue with it. As art critic Clement Greenberg reminds us, when an artist turns away from familiar subjects, they turn towards the language of their own craft. In this way, true abstraction is comprised of confusion and chaos that defies the limitations of clarity in understanding. Each detail obeys a unique internal logic of emotions and ideas beyond reach of words or realism. Where revealed meanings do not uphold what is seen, rather the disciplined act of seeing beyond the essence of creation.

Come see these works, and more, yourself during Master Drawings New York 2026!

On the life of Alexander the Great, Plutarch famously wrote: “When [an artist] sets out to create a likeness, he relies above all upon the face and the expression of the eyes…” and, later in Ways of Seeing, John Berger describes the role of portraiture to reveal “how people see themselves and how they want to be seen by others” (1972).

Portraiture across centuries reveals not just faces, but personhood. From a nineteenth-century watercolor of a West African musician, to refined Parisian society, Baroque myth, a bold red self-portrait, and the striking Seminole chief—explore these works, and more, during Master Drawings New York 2026!

MDNY is excited to announce our 2026 brochure cover, The Ring, courtesy of !

Rediscovered after more than a century, The Ring by Joseph Mallord William Turner RA, emerges as a rare and compelling example of the artist’s mastery of line, atmosphere, and narrative suggestion. Long thought lost, the drawing now re-emerges as a significant contribution to Turner’s literary illustrations.

Created for Thomas Moore’s prose poem The Epicurean (1838), The Ring depicts the dramatic moment when the hero, Alcuphron, clings to a magical ring while suspended in a collapsing Egyptian pyramid. Of the various designs Turner produced for the publication, only four were engraved, The Ring among them, and this work is likely the final finished version given to the engraver Edward Goodall.

Strikingly modern in both structure and mood, the drawing stands apart from Turner’s traditional literary illustrations, anticipating the heightened drama later associated with artists such as Gustave Dore. Once dismissed by critics, the work is now recognized for its imaginative force and theatrical intensity, an insight into Turner’s creative powers at their height.

TOMORROW! Exhibition Tour of Witnessing Humanity: The Art of John Wilson, November 7 at 1PM at The Metropolitan Museum of Art ()

Join Jennifer Farrell, Jordan Schnitzer Curator, Department of Drawings and Prints, The Metropolitan Museum of Art for an exhibition tour of Witnessing Humanity: The Art of John Wilson (on view at The Met Fifth Avenue through February 8, 2026).

For over six decades, the American artist John Wilson (1922–2015) made powerful and poetic works that captured his life as a Black American artist and his ongoing quest for racial, social, and economic justice. Wilson’s art reflected on and responded to the turbulent times in which he lived. His subjects included racial violence, labor, the writings of Richard Wright, the Civil Rights Movement, street scenes, and intimate images of family life, with a particular focus on fatherhood. Despite the power of his art and the continuing relevance of the themes he explored, Wilson’s work has not received the recognition it deserves.

“Witnessing Humanity” will be the largest exhibition of Wilson’s work and the artist’s first solo museum show in New York. Visitors will see superb examples of Wilson’s paintings, prints, drawings, and sculpture, as well as illustrations for children’s books and archival material.

The exhibition is organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston ()

TOMORROW MORNING! Claes Oldenburg Exhibition Tour & Study Room Visit, November 6 at 11:30AM at The Whitney ()

Best known for his sculptures of everyday objects rendered in unexpected textures or dimensions, Claes Oldenburg (1929–2022) once proclaimed, “I am for an art that takes its form from the lines of life itself.” His innovations in sculpture emerged out of his drawing practice, which enabled him to swiftly record and transform the contours of the world around him. Claes Oldenburg: Drawn from Life focuses on the artist’s drawings from the 1960s in which he playfully reimagined the spaces—streets, stores, homes—and objects of daily life. This selection from the Whitney’s extensive collection of Oldenburg’s works on paper attests to his wide range as a draftsman and expanded definition of life drawing.

REGISTER NOW! Beyond Boundaries: Mapmaking, November 6 at 5:30PM at The Institute of Fine Arts ()

Even in the age of satellite images, GPS, and Google Maps, mapping remains a drawn act—raising questions of orientation, imagination, and belonging. This program explores maps – their making, their functions, and their repurposing – focusing on mapmaking as a hand-drawn delineation of place and boundaries, and how artists and scholars expand on mapmaking traditions to suggest new ways of seeing and placing ourselves. From early hand-drawn maps to the tools and techniques that render mapmaking possible, from the juxtaposition of distinct histories of movement to the creation of new worlds, this panel brings together speakers with vastly different perspectives to reflect on the history of drawing maps and consider how mapping—past and present—shapes our understanding of place and invites us to draw it anew.
