Galleries Scramble Amid Brooklyn’s Gentrification

Thanks for the shout out Holland Cotter!

Congrats Benoît Broisat, Sessa Sessa Sessa, David Horvitz, Farah Khelill, Antoine Lefebvre Editions, Nicole Reber, Paul Soulellis. Rod Malin, Transmitter

"The seven artists in “Publish or Perish,” a collaboration with Arts and Sciences Projects, at Transmitter (which refers to itself as an artist-run curatorial project), sidestep the notion of art-as-precious-object by focusing on unconventional means of delivery. Sessa Englund offers key chains carrying images from her Instagram account. Antoine Lefebvre invites you to download books from the Internet. In the news release, the artist David Horvitz proposes a telepathic version of mail art: “For $1 USD I will think about you for one minute. I will email you the time I start thinking, and the time I stop."

At least some art being shown and produced in this changing borough has a political edge.

Cookbook Dreams and Inflatable Futures

Opening this weekend in Baltimore: Cookbook Dreams and Inflatable Futures, a group exhibition organized by Arts & Sciences Projects at Guest Spot at The Reinstitute.

The show will feature artists’ books and works in other media by Antoine Lefebvre, Robin Cameron, Cybele Lyle, Luca Luca Nino Antonucci, John Bohl, NOWORK, and Lauren van Haaften-Schick.

Inspired by Ant Farm's 1971 Inflatocookbook, which envisioned a utopia of DIY inflatables within its humble photocopied pages, Cookbook Dreams and Inflatable Futures brings together artists who concoct varied approaches to circulating and advancing concepts and ideas central to their practice through innovative means of book making and distribution.

Opening: Saturday March 8, 2014, 7:00-10:00 PM
On view through April 19, 2014

10x10 Day #6 highlights selection by Philip Tomaru / Arts & Sciences Projects

Enjoy this thoughtful selection of "photozines and artists’ publications that use photographic content as source material": http://artsandsciencesprojects.com/10x10

"Over the past several years, we’ve seen explosive growth in independent publishing as artists have sought direct engagement with both analog and digital technologies in the production and circulation of their work. My selection acknowledges these dynamic and vibrant efforts. These are books I enjoy in the comfort of my home while sipping a cup of coffee. These are books I discovered through direct contact with artists, at specialty bookstores, and at venues such as the NY Art Book Fair."
