Compère Collective Presents: 'Ción, Mamá, a solo exhibit by artist Gilly Lugo. Her mixed media figurative paintings and sculptures are influenced by cultural symbols and imagery from her Dominican heritage. Her work explores spirituality, identity and legacy as seen through the matriarchal lens.

✨Compère Collective Presents✨ RESET by  • on view until October 28th

This show envelops you in moments suspended between reality and imagination, etched in the delicate strokes of hyper-realistic pencil art. At its surface, a world of animals at rest. Dive Deeper, and each piece whispers questions that linger long after you've moved on. The works draw you into a quiet space where answers feel unnecessary. The experience is less about what is seen and more about what is sensed- a subtle invitation to dwell in the questions rather than seek the answers. It's an aesthetic pause that beckons you to explore realms that remain undefined, both visually and conceptually.

Gallery is open Monday-Friday from 10am-6pm.

💭 Compère Collective Presents 💭

HUTTERITES by
brought to you by

In 2004, David Vasilev was in South Dakota photographing the Lakota people when a Medicine Man sent him north to seek a reclusive, German-speaking religious sect called the Hutterites.

"The Bulgarian-born photographer found himself in a pocket of space where the spinning of time seems to have come to a halt. He spent a month photographing members of the Hutterite colony, focusing on the daily nuances of the youth. The resulting photographs beautifully capture them in moments of work and play, inviting us into a rarely-seen world encapsulating elements of humor, warmth, and youthful naiveté." -- i-D Magazine

Like Walker Evans, Diane Arbus, Dorothea Lange, Gordon Parks and Sally Mann, Vasilev's black and white photographs merge portraiture and photojournalism, taking seriously the lives of children. Vasilev's Hutterites stare back at the viewer with a wary curiosity that mirrors the viewer's own.

Some of the awesome pieces now featured in PORTALS by .portal.portal. On view until 6/18. . . 🪞🪞

PORTALS, is a series of hand collaged panels based off of the Tarot, that will eventually become a divination deck of its very own.

PORTALS is an e x p a n s i o n on the traditional decks of eras past, a current reimagining that honors its ancient roots while being open to the here, the now and the great beyond. Richly reverent in deep love for the Earth & elements, PORTALS also reaches for the divine and cosmic. We want this series to represent the kaleidoscopic diversity of human & non human life - kin.

This project is elemental in nature, animist in perspective & hopes to be a collection that speaks soulfully to all sorts.

PORTALS is a collection that intends to honor all beings as divine and to bring our spirits closer together in the cosmic constellation of life.

Compére Collective Presents: Second Nature by Hoffman & Swinburne, feat. Kim Loewe & Susan Rowland.

When Kim Loewe met Susan Rowland, both artists were at a turning point. For Loewe, that meant a shift from printmaking into ceramics and drawing; Rowland, the opposite. For each artist, the transition represented a deepening connection to the natural world.

While Rowland’s later work was among her most figurative and literal - she was printing
actual plants - Loewe’s embrace of nature is more abstract. Loewe’s forms, in both drawing and sculpture, evoke bear claws, a coral reef, a mudslide, without ever slipping into representation.

🕐 Friday, April 7 from 6-8pm
📍 Compére Collective @ 351 Van Brunt St, Brooklyn

Who we are

Compère Collective’s mission is to nurture and host diverse artistic practice and thoughtful dialogue; understanding that art should be used as a catalyst for critical thinking. We place great significance on the human interaction and connection that art makes possible, and see our role not just as host but also as active connector. Similarly, we value the integrity of the artistic process and the link that personal expression has to a broader understanding and respect of social contexts. The exhibition space is intimate and capable of showcasing a rich variety of media, which have included all the traditional formats, from painting and performance to facilitated discussion and dance. We relish the freedom this space provides for artists, collaborators, and curators— to reinvent what “gallery” can mean, artistically, conceptually and as a force within the community.

Compère Collective was founded by Victoria Alexander, owner of Redhook’s Realty Collective. Victoria’s boutique real estate firm in Brooklyn celebrates the borough's rich history, architecture, culture and people. You will often see the word “passionate” when describing the way her collective of real estate agents feels towards the place they live and work. Located in the culturally and artistically rich neighborhood of Red Hook Brooklyn, Compère Collective strives to do the same, and has hosted a diverse set of exhibitions, events, and artists since opening its doors in 2012.
