Which intact copies of this ancient (very famous) statue remain?
Around 20 full-scale copies survive in various states. My wording is a bit misleading in the reel - this is the MOST not only in tact discus thrower.
The two best-preserved full-scale Roman replicas are:
1. Palombara (Lancellotti) Discobolus - discovered on the Esquiline Hill in 1781, now housed in Palazzo Massimo alle Terme, Rome, with minimal restoration (this one)
2. Townley Discobolus – unearthed near Hadrian’s Villa in the 1790s, now at the British Museum, also largely intact.
