The Society for the Advancement of Social Studies

The Society for the Advancement of Social Studies All the history you knew but forgot, and all the booze you need to forget it again! The Society for the Advancement of Social Studies was founded in 2011 by Larissa Hayden and Anna Rasche, two lovely ladies with a shared passion for history, hosting events, and drinking like champs.

Over the past eight years, they’ve sought to create an inviting environment for adults to come and learn the history they feel like they should know about, but don’t yet.

This week, we're seeing history happening before our very eyes. At SASS, we've spent the last few days listening and learning how to better live up to our mission statement: presenting all the history we should know, but maybe don't yet.

Here are a few places where people are doing just that:
>> The podcast Black History in Two Minutes
>> Free Yale class!!! https://oyc.yale.edu/african-american-studies/afam-162
>> A thread of documentaries that talk about black history, the black lives matter movement and protests https://twitter.com/starkdanys/status/1267341394156285952
>> Black History on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/blackhistory/
>> The Association of Black Women Historians https://twitter.com/ABWHTruth

SASS will also be donating our past event's profits to supporting the Association of Black Women Historians, who have provided a network and recognition for women of African descent who are historians or students of history for the last 40 years.

Love to our NYC family and those elsewhere, let's keep fighting the good fight.

We're not usually ones to follow trends, preferring the time-honored tradition at reflecting back after a few years pass. But given the current state of things, we're considering joining in on the hot new craze, the big Zoom fad.

Would anyone be interested if we held an online SASS session?

Hey y'all - the New-York Historical has canceled or postponed all programs through the end of April to help support the city’s efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19.

All of those who have purchased a ticket to that event will receive an email from N-YHS regarding refunds, and we hope to reschedule our program at a future date.

On the Philosophy of Marriage

“Marry or don't marry, you will regret it either way,” Soren Kierkegaard once wrote pseudonymously. Was he right? Why do people marry? Should they? In marriage, people promise ‘till death do them part, but can marriage make love stay? Or is it actually the fastest way to cure lovers? Is marria...
