Founded in 1987, the gallery specializes in modern and contemporary art and is dedicated to discovering and cultivating cutting edge contemporary artists. One of the first organizations to bring contemporary Russian art to international audiences, Gallery SHCHUKIN has exhibited established and emerging artists, including David Datuna, Sasha Semenov, Andrey Shchelokov, Aladdin Garunov, Vladimir Migachev, Natalia Zaloznaya, Igor Tishin, and many others. The gallery frequently collaborates with prominent art institutions in Russia, Asia, Europe, and Scandinavia including a group show of contemporary work at the Tampere Art Museum in Finland; “Russian Collection Presents...” at the United Nations in Geneva; “Russian Mind,” a group show of Perestroika era artists in Graz, Austria; “Matrix XX Century,” a collection of digital work commissioned for the Japanese International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation in Tokyo; as well as projects with The State Tretyakov Gallery and The State Museum of the East in Moscow. In October 2013, Gallery SHCHUKIN expanded to Europe, opening an exhibition space on Avenue Matignon in Paris, France, with a solo exhibition of installations by David Datuna, “Power And Beauty.” The newest location of Gallery SHCHUKIN, a two-level, 3,500-square-foot space at 524 W 19th Street in New York, opened in spring 2014. Through exhibitions, publications, collaborations, and its non-profit component, “National Foundation for Art Collection,” Gallery SHCHUKIN continues to support and promote established gallery artists and introduce emerging talent. The founder of Gallery SHCHUKIN, collector Nikolay Shchukin, is a former psychotherapist specializing in psychoanalysis. Presently, Mr. Shchukin works on the universal concept of psychology and sociology of art.

By 1938 Picasso was beyond famous: he was a legend and the living icon for artistic "genius." One of the perks for such geniuses is that they get to indulge themselves with impunity, and that Picasso proceeded to do over the remaining 35 years of his life. This gallery presents merely a small sample of that amazing output.

As is the case with all MWW galleries, the works are presented chronologically and many are accompanied by commentaries giving useful background information about the work or subject depicted. (You will need to click "See More" to the right of the large images to access these.)

For more Picasso, see these recent MWW exhibits:

* Picasso & Braque - Founding Fathers (of Cubism)
* Picasso after Cubism: I - 1917-1938

This MWW Special Collection of 500 paintings presents some of finest achievements of Western Art from 1300 to 1900. Along with its companion gallery on Modern Art, it aims to give the viewer/reader a comprehensive picture of the development of the art of painting from the early Italian Renaissance to the present day.

All the images are accompanied by comments, mostly original, which give detailed background on the artist, work and period in question. You will need to click on "See More" to the right of the full-screen image to read these.

The works are arranged chronological order, with the earliest ones first. This gallery of paintings with their accompanying commentary should be able to function as an online art history text for secondary school and university students who can read English.

The gallery is now complete. Some of the pictures will be included in the new MWW Artwork of the Day gallery. Feel free to download the full-size images to your computer (right-click and save as...). They make good backgrounds and screensavers.

Check out our new major summer show in our French gallery dedicated to l'Ecole de Paris.

The School of Paris, that we are happy to show in our gallery from June 15th till September 13th 2017 is represented by the work of Serge Charchoune, Léon Zack, Pierre Dmitrienko and Isaak Pailes.
Serge Charchoune in his European period consistenly pays tribute to Magical Realism and Purism, but more importantly, was almost the only Russian-born artist who was a part of the Dadaism movement since its outset. In the post-war decades, Charchoune, who had for a long time been engaged literary activities, experiences a new creative upsurge. In fact, this is his deeply original individual version of a meditative natural philosophical abstraction in which there is still a place for artistic representation: motifs of running water and the externalisation of a musical phrase.
Léon Zak also has a Russian background - inclusing education; in Paris he led an active exhibition life as a member of the Neo-humanists. In the post-war years he turned to abstraction. The work represented in our exhibition, with its plant motif, chimes with the above mentioned Charchoune canvas. This is not about stylistic analogies but a shared approach: Zack, we can see, of course, is not aiming for the optical analogue of a micro-zoom, but maximum tactility - as close as possible in colour, form, and body to the epidermis of the leaf. It appears not so much as an image of the leaf, rather a navigation across its surface. Here too there is a balance of post-object and pre-abstract.
Pierre Dmitrienko belongs to the next generation of Russian Parisians. The work we present in our gallery, we would classify as dramatic abstraction: it represents complex states of consciousness.

Kavakos and Auerbach Discuss New Violin Concerto - The National Herald

The new violin concerto is divided into 13 dreams, not movements like most musical compositions. The prolific composer also creates visual art as part of her creative process including sculptures that will be on display at Gallery Shchukin, 110 East 31st Street in Manhattan, throughout March, and a bronze piece also entitled NYx. The sculpture was on display during the discussion and features the musical notation of the new work carved onto it.
