“Shield” is a sculpture composed of glass, electronics, brainwaves, video projection and transducer speakers, created by visual artist Æsa Björk & musician Tinna Thorsteinsdóttir. The artists mapped their brain activity with EEG recordings, showing how certain emotional states, life events and physical movement, effect brain functions. Shield resonates with feelings of loneliness and isolation that is felt during the pandemic, but have always been with us.

“Shield” is part of ART’S NEW NATURES: Contemporary Nordic artists respond to current realities of social isolation and crises with their art and interviews, on view at streamingmuseum.org Sponsored by the Nordic Culture Fund and Nordic Council of Ministers.

Listen to what the New York Times calls ‘great artistry’ and ‘cinéma vérité for the ear’ in Jana Winderen’s extraordinary sound art compositions, and stories about her adventurous field trips around the world. Over the past 20 years she has been recording audio environments deep under water, ice and landscapes. Her background in biochemistry, mathematics, and fish ecology helps her understand her explorations from a scientific perspective and is useful when speaking with scientists about environmental issues.

In Anne Senstad’s short film Utopie / Utopia (2020), acclaimed film and tv actor Bill Sage’s monologue performance interprets the writing of French philosopher Roland Barthes on utopian concepts of tolerance, the necessity of a critical view of the industrialized world of our consumer society, and how we live together. Kevin Roche, Architect Who Melded Bold With Elegant, Dies at 96

Mr. Roche received the Pritzker in 1982, this is from his acceptance speech:

“Is not the act of building an act of faith in the future, and of hope? Hope that the testimony of our civilization will be passed on to others, hope that what we are doing is not only sane and useful and beautiful, but a clear and true reflection of our own aspirations. And hope that it is an art, which will communicate with the future and touch those generations as we ourselves have been touched and moved by the past.”

A favorite of corporations, museums and government, he was given wide leeway in expressing his restless imagination in refined but daring ways.
