ARChive of Contemporary Music

ARChive of Contemporary Music The ARChive of Contemporary Music is a not-for-profit music library dedicated to collecting, preserving and providing information about popular music from around the world.
(11)

ARC was founded in 1985 by Bob George, the current Director, and David Wheeler. Fred Patterson is head archivist. Will Susich has recently joined as an archivist. Our Board of Advisors is comprised of respected members of the music and entertainment community. Board members create and maintain Special Collections, such as the 10,000 disc Keith Richards’ Blues Collection. ARC currently occupies over 14,000 sq. ft., at two sites in Tribeca, in Lower Manhattan. Our main office is on the ground floor at White Street. To move forward, and allow access to our collections, in early 2009 ARC partnered with Columbia University to create a major cultural institution merging academic study and popular music, to enrich and enhance the cultural life of New York City, the country and the world.

Mission: The ARChive of Contemporary Music is a not-for-profit music library dedicated to collecting, preserving and providing information about popular music from around the world. Now in its twenty-seventh year of operation, ARC is the largest and most important popular music colfourth lection in the world – with over two million sound recordings and approximately three million photographs, books, press kits, videos, memorabilia and related ephemera. Our simple goal is to guarantee that the world’s musical heritage is preserved for future generations to study and enjoy. We believe that all forms of popular music, jazz, be-bop, bluegrass, country, rock, rap, blues, enka, reggae, calypso, zydeco, and countless other forms are significant cultural expressions. All musics entertain as well as reveal a people and their values to the rest of the world.

As I slowly catalog our Punk era singles I am amazed by the value of these scarce, independently released, 45 in ARC’s collection. These are not the mass produced and widely promoted bands we are familiar with. These are releases by mostly ephemeral outfits, with highly personal vision, that never gained a large audience – but looking at the limited, ongoing demand – loyal fans are out there. So as we are busy setting up our new home, look for occasion posts on recordings like Fakir – The Only Dance There Is/F-A-L-A-N-G-E ( 7” single, no date [1981], no label, no number, no speed [45]).

This No Waver was issued in an edition of 100 (ARC has two) and only available at the late, great 99 Records shop in the Village, NYC. Name of band is handwritten in felt tip on front of sleeve and each back is different, spray painted and hand painted by Bob Solete. The band, R. Kane (gtr, voc), Bill Schilling (gtr), Janine Gentile (bass) Bobby Schilling (drms), only did four live performances, the first at the ‘Red Brigade Benefit’ at Club 57. At the Noise Fest, 1981, at White Columns, Thurston Moore described them as “awesome, odd and sensual.” Discogs says, 8.26.2020 : 3 For Sale from $528.24, Median sale was $240.00 and highest to date $263.16 ALSO: Back covers of our two copies of the only Fakir release.

C+C = Celebratin’ + Catalogin’ Well I haven’t worn shoes for a week as I go into the 4th of July weekend! And it will be a few weeks before we can start workin’ at the new ARC. So I thought I’d pass the time on my book about Punk 45s. So the Fourth was my first day sorting and cataloging thousands of relevant discs. Turned out to be a whole day cataloging German releases – things I picked up in the early 80s when I was DJ throughout Europe. Some arty things in the mix like this Holger Hiller single above, celebrating on the mantle with our local Patriotic bear.
Do let me know if you have a Punk 45 collection. OK? The book will be unique in that everything in it will be part of the ARC’s collection and I hope to illustrate more than 2,500 discs. I’ll have lots of singles to trade for things we do not have and welcome donations. Great fun ahead.

GIVING TUESDAY, but.... Well there are so many heartfelt pleas going out today. For healthcare, healthcare workers, food aid, education, candidates who actually could make things better. So after you help them, consider the ARChive.

We are relocating. We love New York City. It’s been our home for 35 years. But the City has never offered an once of help, and rents were our undoing. The good news is our new home upstate is spectacular. It will allow us to create a state-of-the-art research facility, residencies for scholars, concerts and a full range of preservation services. Most importantly, we will now have long-term safe conditions for the collection and a secure future. One of the things we saved, thinking of Cinco de Mayo and beyond the thousands of Mexican recordings here at ARC, is this napkin from our collection of musical themed textiles.

One way folks can help is to contribute to our move. We started on Mayday and will be be loading a van everyday till the end of the month. Each vanload costs $2,500.00. If you’re able, that would be a great donation. So far three people have. We suggest via PalPal or even better, our newest supporter, every.org. Every.org allows donors to make automatic, regular donations every month. AND it can be set up so there are no fees or deductions – ie, the charity gets 100% of the donation. Even small donations add up and really help. Do give them a look-see.

And here’s another look at one corner of the ARC, sadly imprisoned sounds ready for moving!

Well ARC is busy packing up for our move to our new home. One thing we discovered is a few boxes, much used and re-used, the one below from 1989, when we moved from Chambers St. to a then desolate Crosby St. Looks like the box has been overused at least 4 time and still holding up well. Us too.

That move took only 3 van trips – this one will take 25+ So we’re asking folks who can, to donate $2500. Everything helps, but that’s what each truckload will cost. The Beggars Group was the first to contribute, so a big thanks to them.

We STILL need someone with a small van and time to haul some of our more fragile items.

Regardless keep in touch, be well, and pass along our info. if you know anyone who may be interested. Thanks! B.George and Fred Patterson. 212-226-6967

Well ARC is busy packing up for our move to our new home. Bad timing, but we have no choice. Of course it’s hard for everyone these days, we understand that. We hope you are all staying safe. But we do need to move the library and Fred and I are working on separate floors – yards apart, worn out, but healthy. Because of safety issues we can’t hire new workers and interns impossible at this time.

Attached is pic of one corner of the ARC ready for the moving vans! Sad to see all those swell LPs and 45s boxed up – maybe for a year – but we have little choice. We are shooting to be completely in our new space in upstate NY by the end of May.

The moving costs are $80,000+. BTW boxes alone are running about $12,000. Another 1000 LP boxes (other pic) just came in today. All this is a lot for us at a time when everyone is worried about money and we are unable to provide any services. Sad to say the government is not helping.

So we’re asking folks who can to donate $2500.
That’s what each truckload will cost + we need 25 – 30 truckloads.

We could also use someone with a small van and time to haul some of our more fragile items. We can load up the van and keep everyone isolated and safe.

Regardless keep in touch, be well, and pass along our info. if you know anyone who may be interested. Thanks! B.George and Fred Patterson.

I posted this Flipper Promo from the Past on Instagram.
I said: "As we pack up the ARC’s music food & candy section there’s this fab lil item. Follow & support ARC as we save everything!" Drew Miller asked: "Does ARC have the 3 Mustaphas 3 soup can? Mine leaked and disintegrated the label long ago" B. ans: "NO! But I can ask Ben M. for one. He was just a lad when I brought Orchestra Jazzira over + he played in that band, before Globestyle. Rock star food + candy difficult to preserve - they have a half life = to the career of the artist! THEN I asked Been Manelson, "Do still have one of those Soup cans?" And ben said: "The evidence. There is one can in the Peoples’ Museum of Szegerely (Tinned Permanent Heritage Room) …but the contents have gone forwards in all directions..."

Fact 1162 has been flashing on Link kiosks all over the city lately. Fun to see even if not exactly true. What is true is all the great folks contacting us and offering space at great rates. Will ARC stay in NYC? Maybe. Still not a peep from the Mayor or any City agency, so it’s hard to stay loyal. Till then we’ll keep looking for those “Young men with unlimited capital” to lend a hand.

There have been a ton of stories on ARC’s need for a new home and 100s of offers of space. Like the offers pouring in from home and abroad, from Memphis to Stuttgart, Troy to Brazil. So fingers crossed. Still not a peep from New York City Department of Cultural Affairs…

Pic above is from the WNBC TV story with two broadcast segments and an online life that ran Jan 7th

Look for a story in the Times of London soon and you can always read about ARC at the NY Times story that ran Sunday, Jan 5. Have a look and continue to support the ARC and all we do. We’ll keep looking for those “Young men with unlimited capital” to lend a hand.

This is what we do. We go around the world, meet amazing people, and save the things they love.

Here’s a bedroom in Carmel CA. Eccentric, essential, exceptional. We packed them up, we cleaned them, we cataloged them. Our only mission is to preserve the music. We’ve been doing it for 35 years now.

To do this we need you. It’s that time of year. If you can donate it would really help. In six months we are leaving lower Manhattan in search of a new home. Hey, we have to order 20,000 boxes!

Lend a hand. Send a donation. You can contribute via PalPal or by mail. www.arcmusic.org

Happy Holidays! Keep in touch.

Today another six boxes of recordings arrived, by surprise I might add, with the latest installment of the massive Richard Zirinsky Collection. Sure there were the usual 10 Paul Weller box sets, more than 250 music DVDs and dozens of Jamaican singles. But the real treat was this paper singles record bag from Kingston, Jamaica. Such fun.

It’s not on the bag, but the location was 11 Tropical Plaza Kingston 10. Pretty close to today’s Bob Marley Museum. But here’s the standout single from inside the bag, “Yes Daddy” by Peter Metro and Jackie Statement. It’s almost a duet, and pretty funny, with Jackie repeatedly answering her father’s persistent inquiry, “Jackie, Ya pregnant, pregnant?” A dancehall Power House release from 1987.

Sorry to say we need this single for our collection, but there are STILL plenty of great items at our Holiday Sale, going on now until Dec 22, everyday 11 – 6. Support all that we do and remember, the ONLY thing anyone needs under that tree is music!

Look Away, Look Away… Today critic David Hinkley dropped off his twice-a- year carload of donated goodies. As usual hundreds of LPs, CDs, books and swag in great condition. This year he outdid himself by donating these two rare 45s.

The almost cleverly named Hatenanny Records (OK subBoomers, it’s a play on ‘Hootenanny,’ minus a syllable, a 60s gathering of folks to sing folksongs) was the label of the American Nazi Party. These folks are still around, but these discs date back to 1964, produced to create awareness and raise funds in the early days of this White nationalist movement.

Singin’ racism was the brainchild of Party founder George Lincoln Rockwell, who changed his name to distance himself from his Greek-born parents, hated all immigrants and African Americans, and sings with a hillbilly twang. Almost nothing is known about labelmates Odis Cochran and The Three Biggots. Online information both champions and decries these recordings – some sites taken down, while others will sell you an MP3. When David bought these by mail in the 60s it prompted a visit from the FBI.

There are rumors of many Hatenanny releases, but we’ve only seen info and images of these two. There is also a picture sleeve of “Ship Those…Back” that we hope someone out there will donate one day. Odd to be delighted to have these 45s, but archives preserve, offering insight into what happened, no matter how odious

Auction to benefit ARC. Rammellzee vs K-Rob “Beat Bop” 12” 1983. Produced & art by Jean Michel Basquiat. Edition of 500. Sotheby’s.com. 4 days left to bid. Currently. $5,500. Before they rocked the world of Hip-Hop, the boys in the dorm issued this very Punk single. It’s the first Def Jam seven-inch release : Hose. Mobo // Girls / Zoo. (7″ 45 rpm, no mfg. #, matrix DEF-SP-1, no date [1982]). Both sided have etched labels drawn by vocalist Mike Espindle, one side with cute lil’ animal drawings and song titles, other side with the band name. It’s packaged in a brown paper bag w/ small white paper xeroxed info glued on front (band name) and back (credits). The message to all, etched on the b-side runoff area, “SMURF IT UP Y’ALL !!” Performers are Warren Bell (bass), Autumn Goft (drums), Michael Espindle (vocals) and Rick Rubin (Guitar). Yep, Rick is the founder of Def Jam. Is that his signature? Sorry about the hard to see etched images – but wait for our book on Punk Era singles. This was the 1,676th one I’ve catalogued to date. Maybe 5,000 more to go. Not all swell, not all valuable, but all reflect the times and help define an era.
