ARChive of Contemporary Music

ARChive of Contemporary Music The ARChive of Contemporary Music is a not-for-profit music library dedicated to collecting, preserving and providing information about popular music from around the world.
ARC was founded in 1985 by Bob George, the current Director, and David Wheeler. Fred Patterson is head archivist. Will Susich has recently joined as an archivist. Our Board of Advisors is comprised of respected members of the music and entertainment community. Board members create and maintain Special Collections, such as the 10,000 disc Keith Richards’ Blues Collection. ARC currently occupies over 14,000 sq. ft., at two sites in Tribeca, in Lower Manhattan. Our main office is on the ground floor at White Street. To move forward, and allow access to our collections, in early 2009 ARC partnered with Columbia University to create a major cultural institution merging academic study and popular music, to enrich and enhance the cultural life of New York City, the country and the world.

Fact 1162 has been flashing on Link kiosks all over the city lately. Fun to see even if not exactly true. What is true is all the great folks contacting us and offering space at great rates. Will ARC stay in NYC? Maybe. Still not a peep from the Mayor or any City agency, so it’s hard to stay loyal. Till then we’ll keep looking for those “Young men with unlimited capital” to lend a hand.

There have been a ton of stories on ARC’s need for a new home and 100s of offers of space. Like the offers pouring in from home and abroad, from Memphis to Stuttgart, Troy to Brazil. So fingers crossed. Still not a peep from New York City Department of Cultural Affairs…

Look for a story in the Times of London soon and you can always read about ARC at the NY Times story that ran Sunday, Jan 5. Have a look and continue to support the ARC and all we do. We’ll keep looking for those “Young men with unlimited capital” to lend a hand.

This is what we do. We go around the world, meet amazing people, and save the things they love.

Here’s a bedroom in Carmel CA. Eccentric, essential, exceptional. We packed them up, we cleaned them, we cataloged them. Our only mission is to preserve the music. We’ve been doing it for 35 years now.

To do this we need you. It’s that time of year. If you can donate it would really help. In six months we are leaving lower Manhattan in search of a new home. Hey, we have to order 20,000 boxes!

Lend a hand. Send a donation. You can contribute via PalPal or by mail. www.arcmusic.org

Happy Holidays! Keep in touch.

Today another six boxes of recordings arrived, by surprise I might add, with the latest installment of the massive Richard Zirinsky Collection. Sure there were the usual 10 Paul Weller box sets, more than 250 music DVDs and dozens of Jamaican singles. But the real treat was this paper singles record bag from Kingston, Jamaica. Such fun.

It’s not on the bag, but the location was 11 Tropical Plaza Kingston 10. Pretty close to today’s Bob Marley Museum. But here’s the standout single from inside the bag, “Yes Daddy” by Peter Metro and Jackie Statement. It’s almost a duet, and pretty funny, with Jackie repeatedly answering her father’s persistent inquiry, “Jackie, Ya pregnant, pregnant?” A dancehall Power House release from 1987.

Sorry to say we need this single for our collection, but there are STILL plenty of great items at our Holiday Sale, going on now until Dec 22, everyday 11 – 6. Support all that we do and remember, the ONLY thing anyone needs under that tree is music!

Look Away, Look Away… Today critic David Hinkley dropped off his twice-a- year carload of donated goodies. As usual hundreds of LPs, CDs, books and swag in great condition. This year he outdid himself by donating these two rare 45s.

The almost cleverly named Hatenanny Records (OK subBoomers, it’s a play on ‘Hootenanny,’ minus a syllable, a 60s gathering of folks to sing folksongs) was the label of the American Nazi Party. These folks are still around, but these discs date back to 1964, produced to create awareness and raise funds in the early days of this White nationalist movement.

Singin’ racism was the brainchild of Party founder George Lincoln Rockwell, who changed his name to distance himself from his Greek-born parents, hated all immigrants and African Americans, and sings with a hillbilly twang. Almost nothing is known about labelmates Odis Cochran and The Three Biggots. Online information both champions and decries these recordings – some sites taken down, while others will sell you an MP3. When David bought these by mail in the 60s it prompted a visit from the FBI.

There are rumors of many Hatenanny releases, but we’ve only seen info and images of these two. There is also a picture sleeve of “Ship Those…Back” that we hope someone out there will donate one day. Odd to be delighted to have these 45s, but archives preserve, offering insight into what happened, no matter how odious

Dear friends of ARC.

We are pleased to announce that Heritage Auctions will be offering a great many posters and handbills - extra copies - from ARC's collection. This is the first time we are doing an auction, and Heritage has greatly reduced fees to help on this fundraising event. Have a look at these beautiful and iconic items. Of special interest is a rare illustrated poetry booklet, edition of 250, handmade + signed by Ric Ocasek. Support the ARC!

Heritage auction (Entertainment - Dallas #7203) runs till November 17.

You can view and bid on any or all of these wonderful, graded items here :
http://entertainment.ha.com/c/search.zx?type=friend-consignorpreview-notice&saleNo=7203&collection=73&FC=0/

Here’s a brief bit from the Heritage catalog : "Heritage is very proud to be representing concert posters and handbills this auction from the ARChive of Contemporary Music in New York City. ARC is a non-profit music library that has over five million artifacts in its collection, focusing on records and recorded music, but with extensive paper archives as well. Co-founder and Executive Directory B. George has been generous enough to consign a number of items to Heritage from the archives of the late Russ Gibb, the legendary Detroit promoter who passed away earlier this year. “Uncle Russ” was as important to Detroit’s Grande Ballroom scene as Bill Graham was to the Fillmore Auditorium and Chet Helms to the Avalon Ballroom. The founders of ARC and the Gibb family have ties together that go back decades. Gibb also had a huge ace in the hole with the talents of legendary poster designer Gary Grimshaw, who did all of the posters shown here."

"Since these items were bequeathed to ARC from Gibb’s archives, they are all original, pre-concert first printings in fabulous condition. Which is why we had the posters immediately graded, with marvelous results. We hope you’ll keep an eye toward the non-profit work of ARC in placing your generous bids for these beautiful pieces."

Thanks so much. Bid if you can and pass along to others who might be interested!

Yours, B. George, Director.

Sorted, Packed and On The Road!
Yesterday ARC sent off the Saul Nowitz Collection, a Gift of the Sidney E. Frank Foundation, to Philly to be digitized by George Blood Audio and the Internet Archive. This batch 23,124 seventy-eight rpm shellac discs and 1200 sixteen-inch transcription discs, V-discs and one-of-a-kind acetates. Just wanted folks to see what a portion of the 339 boxes look like. Still LOTS to catalog - helpers always welcome!

For the past week ARC has been sifting through the more than 300 boxes of recordings recently donated as the Saul Nowitz Collection, a Gift of the Sidney E. Frank Foundation. While predominately 78 rpm discs there are nearly 5,000 LPs.

The two above brightened our day. They are by Trinidadian singer, actor, folklorist and the first black actor to work with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Edric Connor (1913-1968). As an actor in later years he achieved his greatest fame with roles in The Vikings, Fire Down Below, Moby Dick, Cry, King of Kings and Cry The Beloved Country and in quite a few hip Brit TV episodes like Danger Man and The Avengers.

So how is it after handling millions of records we’d never heard of Mr. Connor or seen these recordings? Well one reason is they are from the UK. Another is that these are just a few of the untold number of rare and wonderful things yet to be discovered.

Not only is the music swell and the covers amazing, but Mr. Connor proves himself a competent scholar with long informative notes on the music at a time when few books on West Indian music were readily available. His LP Songs from Jamaica (1952) open with "Day Dah Light". It was covered by Louise Bennett in 1954, picked up and perked up by Calypsonian Irving Burgie in 1955 and in 1957 the Harry Belafonte version emerged as “Day-O.”

More soon on the Saul Nowitz Collection and what we unearth. It’s delightful discoveries like this that make the reboxing and cataloging more fun than work. Thanks to the artist for Creating the music and the collectors who kept it safe.

Maddux Pearson, a graduate student at NYU, has been working at ARC to lay the groundwork for a database and image gallery of our memorabilia collections. Here’s his take on one of the nice things he discovered in the very first of a 100 or so boxes he will be looking at…

As I lifted a teeshirt out of the way I discovered three copies of a small booklet inside a plastic sleeve. They were intimate, mimeographed booklets by Ric Ocasek, the late frontman of the Cars. Titled “Troublizing,” and referencing Mr. Ocasek’s solo album of the same name, these were 8 pages of poetry from 1997, handmade in an edition of 250. The kicker was they were signed by Ric and stitched together by his then wife Paulina Porizkova.

As someone whose knowledge of Ric Ocasek was limited to his work with the Cars and production for bands like Weezer, I was immediately intrigued by its abstract, greyscale cover juxtaposed with the name of its popstar creator. It seems that I was not alone in feeling this; when Howard Wuelfing at Columbia donated these booklets to ARC, he included with them a note to its director explaining them punctuated by an emphatic, “No sh*t.” This series of poems is filled with evocative imagery (i.e. “twitching wildly/twelve birds/heading for fire”) and what seem like Ocasek’s personal musings (i.e. “lyrics are/confused fragments/of interconnecting/thoughts”). Each poem is lain against a greyscale, sometimes-altered image of modern life, creating a sobering mood.

08/08/2019

What Was the First Rock’n’Roll Record? asks Fred Patterson, Head Archivist @ www.arcmusic.org - Deke Dickerson is a person who knows about music; mostly early rock’n’roll music. He’s a guitarist who specializes in roots music—especially rockabilly and hillbilly styles. He’s also a record producer and songwriter. Plus, he writes about music with passion and authority. He knows his stuff, that’s for sure.

So when we saw that he wrote a two-part article for the Please Kill Me blog regarding the beginnings of rock’n’roll, we had to read it because his take on this subject was bound to be interesting, unique and educational.

He did not disappoint.

Mr. Dickerson claims that rock’n’roll had its beginnings in Wildwood, New Jersey when the exciting R&B Jump combo The Treniers influenced the hillbilly group The Saddlemen in the early Fifties. Mr. Dickerson thus contends that the first rock’n’roll record is “Rock Around the Clock” by Bill Haley & the Comets. He spells it all out in elegant prose, including interviews with some of the key players, and it makes total sense. We are sure many folks won’t agree with him—it is generally considered that “Rocket 88” by Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats (really Ike Turner & his Kings of Rhythm in disguise) was the first rock’n’roll record. Mr. Dickerson states why it is not.

Personally, we believe in the Buddy Bolden theory that no matter who get’s hailed as the first to do something, there was always someone who did it before and is totally unrecognized. Who was the first jazz musician? Who was the first blues singer? Who was the first country & western singer? What was the first punk rock band? Who cares? It’s not something we think about here at the ARChive—we just keep all the records!

However, Mr. Dickerson’s story is very well researched and written, and it deserves to be read by anyone interested in these sorts of things. In order to bring attention to Mr. Dickerson’s writing, Bill Haley’s Rock Around the Clock album is now sitting in the window of the ARChive of Contemporary Music.
