Meru Gallery welcomes a gorgeous, very high quality Axe God/Pendant from the Guanacaste/Nicoya Region of Costa Rica, once worn by someone of very high status. This fine example depicts an abstract avian figure, with a large crest on top of its head. It's made from a beautiful, highly polished Jade, which was the most desirable of all materials in many cultures in ancient times. Measures 3 3/8 inches long. Drilled biconically on each side for suspension. Circa 500AD.

Axe gods started out as celts, which were then string cut into two pieces. They were then carved into humans, birds, or abstract figures, and finally drilled for suspension.

Provenance: This superb example once sold in the world's most prestigious Pre-Columbian auction, Sotheby's, in May 1993, with an estimate of $800-1200, nearly 33 years ago; Ex. Brad Cowan/The Cowan Collection. NFS! ENJOY!!!

Meru Gallery welcomes a fine Seated Hunchback Figure from the Colima culture of western Mexico. People with this rare physical condition are often portrayed in the ceramic art of the Shaft Tomb cultures, thought to be magical or have Shamanic powers. This example is depicted with ear spools, and a simple headdress/hat, while her hands are placed together at the waist. Classic coffee bean style eyes. Measures 4 1/8 inches high, and 2 3/8 inches deep. Dates in the 100BC-250AD range. Excellent overall condition, solid and intact! NFS! ENJOY!!!

Provenance:
Ex. Brad Cowan/the Cowan Collection; Ex. Private collection of the late Dr. David Harner, who had one of the largest collections in the States, largely amassed in the 50's and 60's, and more recently in a private Nevada collection.

The Colima people flourished in ancient west Mexico along with the Nayarit and Jalisco people (collectively known as the Shaft Tomb Cultures) from around 200BC-250AD. All three produced incredible works of art, especially in the form of ceramic figures.

An EXCEPTIONAL Granodiorite Nicoya "Trophy Head" Effigy. Atlantic Watershed Region, Costa Rica. Abundant inclusions and mineral deposits, in addition to surface pitting most likely the result of the pecking technique.

Prominent in pre-Columbian Costa Rican art (c. 800–1550 CE), trophy heads served as significant symbols of power, warfare, and ritualistic, magical-religious practice rather than solely decorative objects. These items—carved from stone, molded in ceramic, or crafted in jade—communicated the prowess of warriors and the social standing of elites.

Provenance: Private California Collection of Ethnographic Art Dealer, Anthony "Anton" Strahznikov; Formerly from a Private California Estate of an Elderly Couple, now deceased, who frequently traveled the world. NFS! ENJOY!!!

A wonderfully oval carved naturalistic hardstone beetle with notched clypeus and striated wing case; base uninscribed. Symbolic for rebirth. Size 2.25 in L. x 1.625 in W. (16 x 11 mm.) Meru Gallery welcomes a MAGNIFICENT fragmentary Northern Qi Dynasty Sandstone Buddha. Standing at an imposing thirteen inches in height with delicately sculpted decorative adornments embellishing the surface. Abundant traces of manganese blooming, encrustations, rooting, and surfaceware all commensurate with age and ritual use (See photos included).
