Sculptors Guild

Sculptors Guild The mission of the Sculptors Guild is to promote, encourage, and serve as an advocate for sculpture and to make contemporary sculpture a relevant part of life.
(2)

History of the Sculptors Guild During the 1930's American art had not yet been recognized as a significant force in the international Artworld. As the industrial world struggled through the Depression many American artists were dependent for their livelihoods on government art programs (WPA) while European artists were heavily favored by museums, galleries, and collectors. The founding of Sculptors Guild in 1937 was a seminal event for Modern sculpture in America. The primary objectives of the founders as stated in an early exhibition catalogue were: "to unite sculptors of all progressive aesthetic tendencies into a vital organization in order to further the artistic integrity of sculpture and give it its rightful place in the cultural life of this country." Sculptors Guild benefited from the generous support of notable sponsors and patrons such as Eleanor Roosevelt, Henry Morgenthau, Fiorello La Guardia, Conger Goodyear, Rockefeller Foundation, Directors of Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Museum and Whitney Museum of American Art.

Mission: The mission of the Sculptors Guild is to promote, encourage, and serve as an advocate for sculpture and to make contemporary sculpture a relevant part of life.

Work by Elizabeth Miller McCue from the SG virtual exhibition Metalworks: Matter & Space.

“Throughout every season this landscape of rolling hills, lush woods, multi-hued broad pastures and the slowly flowing Delaware River is breathtaking. Touch the River that carved through the landscape, and you are once joined to its opposite shore. Plunge into the silence of the woods and you are filled with enchantment, the canopy a cathedral. The woods are a sanctuary, a shelter. Its branches are arms, embracing us; its crown of leaves enveloping like hands. Here we bear witness to the natural cycle of renewal and rest. ”

“Great art, whether it be visual, sculptural, functional or audio, has a presence, a spirit which it truly felt. I seek to incorporate that presence, that spirit into every piece I create. Art is an unfounded religion whose inspiration comes from a divine source. The power is within each of us, and we should use it in everything we do, in all walks of life. It is the power of transformation. Transformation of the mundane into the divine.”

Work by Darryl Lauster from the SG virtual exhibition Metalworks: Matter & Space.

"My work investigates American history and contemporary culture. It hinges on the acceptance that our understanding of America is largely subjective. My approach ranges from reverence to agitation, which is, in part, a response to my perceived lack of critical inquiry in American public discourse, which increasingly seeks to replace fact with belief. Conrad Levenson is an artist, architect, collector and recycler. Mr. Levenson continues, in his own way, the tradition of those sculptors who chose to work with scraps and discards, appreciating and exploring their potential for artistic expression. He subscribes to the old Zen maxim:

Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of the masters,

seek what they sought

"The sculptural effect is achieved by employing a series of linear permutations which distort a predetermined pattern of horizontal planes. the planes. when combined, form a square and create a solid shape and geometric abstraction. An invisible line passing under the planes raises the affected planes into the third dimension. This raising and resting of affected planes, as the line angle changes, produces a provocative series of variations."

Work by Alberto Marcos Bursztyn from the SG virtual exhibition Metalworks: Matter & Space.

Alberto is a Brooklyn-based artist whose installations and sculptures explore aesthetic possibilities and psychological meanings of obsolete and discarded objects. Alberto’s art is informed by the events that shaped his family’s multi-generational migrations across continents. Alberto’s own geographic trajectory traces an arc from the Argentine Andes to Far Rockaway, to kibbutz, Brighton Beach and Park Slope. His multi-media works invite reflection by highlighting the continuities of memory as well as the incongruities and possibilities of the present.

Master welder & SG member Janet Goldner presents free standing and wall mounted steel sculptures in Glyphs her second exhibition with Carter Burden Gallery. While this exhibition highlights her steel sculptures, her work explores culture, identity and social justice in various media: steel sculpture, photography, video, installation and social projects. It consistently bridges diverse cultures, celebrating the unique beauty and genius of each as well as what we have in common. Goldner is at once an artist and researcher; her immersive fieldwork and annual visits to Mali provide her with inspiration. She writes, “Social projects internationally and in the US include participation with diverse groups of artists and non-artists. I engage in long-term collaborations, particularly with Malian artists. We are all, at the same time, researcher and object of research producing dialogues and concrete works of art.”

The exhibition can be seen on Carter Burden's website and Artsy.net

West Harlem Art Fund presents Personal Goal Post by SG Member Conrad Levenson, as their first outdoor art
installation on Governors Island this summer, courtesy of the artist and Sculptors Guild.

Personal Goal Post can be seen in Nolan Park outside of Building 10.

"I salvage scrap materials and obsolete objects, repurposing and recomposing them as works of art. In the case of Personal Goal Post, an antique hand made iron foundry tool was chosen as the framework for this sculpture. The uppermost element is an abstracted “U” shape referencing the universally recognizable form of a football goal post. At 24 inches wide, it is 1/12th the size of the real thing ---- a scale that the viewer can relate to and connect with. I often combine previously unrelated items in my works. In the case of Personal Goal Post, I placed a pair of back-to-back convex chromed discs in the center. These small but expansive mirrors provide the critical personal connection of the viewer to the sculpture, placing their reflection at the center of the visual and emotional experience. Personal Goal Post coaxes and inspires viewers to stop and reflect upon their current circumstances, their relationship to others and the greater world that surrounds them. Although created before the current Covid-19 pandemic, this sculpture especially resonates with people today, as they confront the challenging and stressful new reality of their daily lives and uncertainty about the future." –Conrad Levenson
