Now on view: SUMO GIRLS. Photographs by Laura Liverani.

The ancient practice of Japanese sumo dates back to the prehistoric era, yet professional sumo remains exclusive to men. Women are prohibited from even stepping foot in the dohyō, the sacred ring where sumotori wrestle. Despite this, female sumo wrestlers do exist even if not yet acknowledged by the ranks of the professional sumo.

On view at www.anastasia-photo.com: Jessica Chou's "Suburban Chinatown" explores daily life in majority-Asian suburbs in California's San Gabriel Valley.

Through this ongoing series, which began in 2013, Chou grapples with the notion of the suburban landscape and how immigrant communities fit into that narrative. Chou poses questions such as how does the narrative of the California ethos, the suburbs and the American Dream take shape within an Asian community that is largely disconnected or omitted from that history? What does it mean to maintain cultural heritage when it is absent from the physical landscape that it originates from?

We are excited to announce the opening of Jonathan Alpeyrie’s AMAZONAS, now on view as a 3D virtual exhibition at www.anastasia-photo.com.

This year, photographer Jonathan Alpeyrie traveled to the remote city of Manaus in Northern Brazil to photograph the pandemic’s effects on some of Brazil’s Indigenous tribes. During his time in Manaus, Alpeyrie visited tribal communities such as the Tuika, the Kokama and the Apurinã who live in and around the city, exploring how they have been affected by the pandemic, as well as the pernicious effect of modernity on their culture and environment.
