Schooner Pioneer was built as a sloop in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania in 1885 to carry sand mined near the mouth of the Delaware Bay to an iron foundry in Chester, Pennsylvania. Ten years later she was re-rigged as a schooner. In the days before paved roads, small coastal schooners such as Pioneer were the delivery trucks of their era, carrying various cargoes between coastal communities: lumber and stone from the islands of Maine, brick on the Hudson River, and oyster shell on the Chesapeake Bay. Almost all American cargo sloops and schooners were wood, but because she was built in what was then this country’s center of iron shipbuilding, Pioneer had wrought-iron hull. She was the first of only two cargo sloops built of iron in this country, and is the only iron-hulled American merchant sailing vessel still in existence. By 1930, when new owners moved her from the Delaware River to Massachusetts, she had been fitted with an engine, and was no longer using sails. In 1966 she was substantially rebuilt and turned into a sailing vessel once again. Today she plies the waters of NY Harbor carrying adults and children instead of cargo in her current role as a piece of “living history.”

A huge congratulations to Maura Hackett who completed her first solo trip as Captain of PIONEER last week! Maura began volunteering at the South Street Seaport Museum in 2007, and the Museum’s sail training program is very fortunate to benefit from Maura's experiences!

A huge congratulations to Maura Hackett who completed her first solo trip as Captain of Schooner Pioneer last week!

Maura began volunteering at the South Street Seaport Museum in 2007. Throughout her progression of the sail training curriculum, Maura has proved her remarkable versatility and work ethic through volunteering, serving as an educator and relief mate on Pioneer, and as a relief chief mate on Lettie G Howard. In 2010 she earned her USCG 100 Ton Inland, Great Lakes Master/Near Coast Mate license.

Maura's experience also extends beyond the Museum's sail training program. Since her start as a sail trainee aboard Picton Castle in 2004, she has worked aboard educational and sail training vessels across the US and New Zealand including Dennis Sullivan, Spirit of New Zealand, U.S. Brig Niagara, Virginia, AJ Meerwald, and Schooner Adventure.

The Museum’s Pioneer Sail Training Program is very fortunate to benefit from Maura's experiences so please join us in congratulating Maura on all of her hard work leading to this milestone!

Happy #NationalHandwritingDay! Today, just like in the past, captains are required to maintain a ship’s deck log recording navigational details, condition of the ship and her crew, weather and other ship’s business. These notebooks are also a legal document serving as record of the captain’s actions in case of a collision, grounding, or other accident. The following ledgers are part of our books and manuscripts collection, as well as our institutional archives, and an example of the necessity and beauty of handwriting in our world.

The older handwritten volume is by Brooklyn-based Captain John H. F. Dahm (American, active 1877-1892) and it includes entries containing navigational observations, accounts and disbursements, cargo manifests, ship logs, letter copies, and correspondence relating to Captain Dahm's trading voyages from New York to the Caribbean (Haiti, French Guyana, St. Kitts) on three vessels: schooner "Early Bird", brig "Emily" and brigantine "Alice Bradshaw."

The other logbook is more recent, and it’s one of the first ledgers we have of our own 1885 Schooner Pioneer. It dates from 1970-1971 and records the schooner’s first voyage from Gloucester, Massachusetts, to her new home, South Street, where she would take her place as part of the Museum’s fleet of historic ships. The logbook includes weather and crew notes, encounters with other ships, and a beautiful love poem with a sketch of Pioneer!
