Early this morning, there was fire at 102 North Highland Avenue in Marfa, Texas and the interior of the building was severely damaged. We are thankful for the work of Marfa’s Volunteer Fire Department and that no one was hurt.

The two-story building, which houses Donald Judd’s Architecture Office, was currently under restoration and was empty. Judd Foundation, together with the local fire and police departments, asks that people stay clear of the structure while the full extent of the damage is assessed. As of now, the cause of the fire is unknown.

⁣In celebration of ‘Donald Judd Interviews’ please join Flavin Judd, Artistic Director of Judd Foundation, and art historian, journalist, and art critic Élisabeth Lebovici for a conversation on the role of artists in society and the importance of artists’ interviews, as well as Judd’s statements regarding politics from a global perspective. Additionally, the two will look at the ideas established by Judd’s architectural spaces in Marfa, Texas and, more broadly, the landscape of the region.⠀ ⠀

The talk takes place Monday, January 20 at 6:30pm at 108 Rue Vieille du Temple, 75003, Paris, France. To register for the event please visit link in bio @davidzwirnerbooks⠀ ⠀

In a 1987 interview during an exhibition in Paris, France, Donald Judd was interviewed for the publication Artpress. In an excerpt from the interview, Judd discusses composition and logic in his work. “I spent a lot of time on the plans, on paper, but they all have a logical basis; I don’t think things out in terms of composition. When you see a color below, it isn’t necessarily related to the color above. They aren’t, in any event, associated in the fabrication process of one piece. I’m very meticulous about the logic of my pieces. But you should only consider logic up to a certain point, because, after all, all the interesting stuff is something else. Having said this, logic is very important.” He continues “…but you have to consider the basic problem. Logic isn’t necessarily so logical. We use it exactly how we feel like using it. My hope is that things are logical in some way. Eventually, that can lead to skepticism, but my feeling is that I should continue in that direction. I try to make pieces that are as logical as possible. And that ends up being my own little logic… Ce n’est pas la logique du monde. C’est ma logique à moi.”⠀ ⠀

⁣Judd Foundation and the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York are pleased to announce a panel discussion which considers the idea of architectonic wholeness through the shared sensibilities of Alvar Aalto and Donald Judd. The program is in conjunction with the ‘Aalto + Chamberlain’ exhibition currently on view at Judd Foundation in New York.⠀

Panelists Sir David Adjaye, Architect; Marianne Goebl, Managing Director at Artek; and Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen, Author, Assistant Dean and Associate Professor at Yale School of Architecture, will look closely at three spaces, Aalto’s Villa Mairea and Paimio Sanitorium in Finland, and Judd’s home and studio, La Mansana de Chinati/The Block in Texas. For each space, the panelists will explore Aalto and Judd’s consideration of interior and exterior, use of materials, and integration of furniture and architecture. Additionally, Sir David Adjaye will discuss how these concepts relate to his practice, in particular his pavilion designs and Monoform furniture series. This conversation will be moderated by Caitlin Murray, Director of Archives and Programs at Judd Foundation.⠀

The panel is free and open to the public and takes place Thursday, January 16 from 6:00-7:30pm in the auditorium at Scholastic, 130 Mercer Street, New York. The ‘Aalto + Chamberlain’ exhibition at 101 Spring Street will be open to the public in advance of the program until 5:30pm.⠀

Please visit our website to reserve tickets.⠀

⁣Judd Foundation is pleased to present ‘Aalto + Chamberlain’ at 101 Spring Street. The ground floor exhibition is now on view with free public hours on Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays from 1:00-5:30pm, until January 18, 2020.⠀

By placing Alvar Aalto furniture and John Chamberlain paintings together, Donald Judd created what was for him, a natural situation for viewing art in which one could, “sit there and have a drink, or eat, or lie down, or read” and then “look at the work.” “I think you look at it, think about it, do something else, then look at it again, or you talk and look at it”, he continued, “It becomes a normal thing.”⠀

In 2018, Judd Foundation began an extensive restoration of the Architecture Office. As part of the restoration, the Foundation completed conservation treatment of the Chamberlain paintings, which are to be reinstalled on a permanent basis on the second floor. This exhibition results from and celebrates these efforts by showing the work of Chamberlain and Aalto in combination.⠀

⁣“I have learned a great deal by having other artists’ work always present. It’s the only way to understand their work. Galleries and museums provide information but not a situation for comprehension. I’ve always needed my own work in my own space to understand it and to think of further pieces." –Donald Judd, ‘Judd Foundation,' 1977⠀⠀⠀ ⠀

The works installed in the Judd Foundation spaces in New York and Texas include works by Judd and twenty-five other artists. Information on these works is now available online in the new Index of Works, an online database searchable by artist, work type, date, and installed location.⠀ ⠀

⁣"The installation and context for the art being done now is poor and unsuitable. The correction is a permanent installation of a good portion of the work of each of the best artists. After the work itself, my effort for some eighteen years, beginning in a loft on Nineteenth Street in New York, has been to permanently install as much work as possible, as well as to install some by other artists. The main reason for this is to be able to live with the work and think about it, and also to see the work placed as it should be. The installations provide a considered, unhurried measure by which to judge hurried installations of my own and others in unfamiliar and often unsuitable places. This effort seems obvious to me, but few artists do it, though there is a tendency to keep earlier work, and the idea of a permanent installation is nearly unknown to the public for visual art." –Donald Judd, 'On Installation,' 1982⠀

Judd Foundation is thrilled to announce the launch of the Index of Works, a new online feature that provides information on the works of art installed by Donald Judd in his living and working spaces. Works by Judd and twenty-five other artists are searchable by artist, work type, date, and installed location, with new photography and contextual material for every work. Conceived for both the public and scholars, the Index of Works is a new tool for greater access to Judd’s work and legacy.⠀
