Howl Happening

Howl Happening Howl! Happening is a hub for experiencing, exploring, and creating art, culture, and counterculture that celebrates the East Village and downtown NYC.
(64)

Like the neighborhood in which it was born and the Howl! Festival that began it all, Howl! Happening is a space of untamed creativity. Howl Happening curates exhibitions and stages live events that showcase the historical legacy and contemporary culture of the East Village and Lower East Side. It is also dedicated to preserving the archives of artists who spent their creative lives working in this vibrant community and houses the Estates of artist Arturo Vega and the beloved performance artist, Tom Murrin aka “The Alien Comic.” The history of the East Village is still being written. The mix of rock and roll, social justice, art and performance, community activism, gay rights and culture, immigrants, fashion, and nightlife are even more relevant now and Howl Happening aims to shine a light on art and social history in the heart of the community where groundbreaking creativity and influential ideas still thrive.

Mission: Howl Arts, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the past and celebrating the contemporary culture of the East Village and Lower East Side. Howl Arts, Inc. creates opportunities for artists to produce and show their work, and engages in activities aimed at improving the quality of life for artists and members of the creative community.

We are excited for the latest #HowlAtHome activity 'Spirit Animal T-Shirt with Scoote LaForge'

"In many traditions, a spirit animal helps to guide or protect a person on a journey. Think about an animal that resonates with you in this moment. It could be a wolf, owl, peacock or a whale. A t-shirt or other article of clothing of your own choosing acts as the canvas. Visualize the spirit animal in your mind and begin painting onto the garment. Select a brush and start with shapes or a simple outline using acrylic paint and materials for fabric. The spirit animal can be fun and whimsical. Have fun! No mistakes."

Tag photos of your artworks on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook with #HowlAtHome and #howlhappening to share your creations with us and connect to everyone who Howls at Home! Please email an image of your final project to Howl’s Education Director, Katherine Cheairs at [email protected]. View the full activity at https://www.howlarts.org/event/howlathome-activity-4/

Here is a beautiful new submission for our last #howlathome activity by @anna.elizabeth.artist

"This picture represents two sides of me; the Artist and my Everyday self showing the duality of light and darkness coming from within. The side my every day self represents what I go through on a day to day basis doing what needs to be done. The Artist shows my creativity and brings my artwork to life. Art is therapeutic for me and helps with healing darkness from my past. The trees in the background symbolizes the grounded in reality aspect of my every day side. The the other side is my blank easel ready for me to create new artwork." - Anna Elizabeth

HOWL TV HAS SOMETHIN’ TO SAY
There Is Someplace to Go When You Can’t Go Anywhere

“We’re in a situation. Got somethin’ to say?” With this simple phrase, Howl Arts opened the door to community-created programming streaming 24/7 on the homepage.
Since the instigation of social isolation, artists, writers, poets, filmmakers, dancers, and even the Disappointed Carrot have created original content for #somethintosay. Short and sweet, poignant and funny, provocative and dazzling, these short films are a channel to the creativity and resilience of our community.

The programming includes a moody story told by Helixx C. Armageddon; a dance performance by Leyya Mona Tawil with violinist Antonina Pozdnyakova; a tour of the murals created by Scooter LaForge in his apartment, dubbed Corona Cave Paintings; writer Robert Rosen reading from his latest book and memoir Bobby in Naziland: A Tale of Flatbush; the wacky Pandemic Cooking with Wendy with special guest Tym Moss; experimental film by writer Armand Ruhlman; poetry by Jeffrey Wright; studio tours with MarcusGlitteris, Ford Crull and Michelangelo Alasa; a musical performance by Robert Petraglia; Exit, a poetic experimental film by Robert Butcher; a dazzling light show by Luigi Cazzaniga and reading by poet Ilka Scobie; a studio tour with Antagonist movement founder Ethan Minsker; a performance by contemporary artist Stas Ginzburg dealing directly with social isolation; John Pizza’s hilarious Full Moon Shows; and a performance by Michael Fontana aka Eileen Dover. "Whether at home or at the theatre, I always look for inspiration outside of the everyday or “normal”—a starting point for the image of myself I want to capture. First, what is my idea? I find inspiration by looking at paintings and photography—work by masters like the painters Titian and John Singer #Sargent, filmmaker and photographer Steven Arnold (a protégé of Salvador #Dalí), or 1920s avant-garde photographer Claude #Cahun. I draw from fine art with the thought of creating a one-time scene for the camera or a fairy-tale-like character. This is only the beginning; it is truly the power of play that turns the idea into your own. Allow yourself to explore without fear of what someone else will think. Approach it like a smart child: fearlessly." —Gail Thacker

The Full Moon Show returns! Visit www.howlarts.org to watch John Pizza's 'DISTANCE' until 12 Midnight tonight.

“The year is … 2035? It’s Monday? Saturday? Thursday? I’ve been holed-up in an empty art gallery in the abandoned Chelsea Arts District NYC for perhaps eons… my stomach in knots, at the end of my rope, writing poetry. How’re you?”

Join @John_Pizza for another Full Moon performance/art film called, 'DISTANCE'. It’s a piece all about the at-home vibes we’ve all been experiencing. The fears, the poetry, the distance… How close is too close is too close is too close?

“Howl is a dream come true in so many ways. I miss everything about Howl, especially the great people and creative energy that fills that very special space. It is exciting to know there'll be online workshops every couple of weeks. Stay happy. Keep safe.”

And So The Sun It’s been honking all morning The highway is filled with cars Of people trying to make it someplace different than where they are Trying not to be late But the traffic’s making them wait. The cars pass by a school They pass by some stores and shops They pass by some restaurants and salons All working non-stop The day had only begun And there’s so much to be done Today’s a morning Just like any other morning Of human civilization under the sun. And so the sun When looking down Thought “What would happen If things changed around? The world is just like a sun That will not set When will the world Ever rest? What if these cars had no place to be? What if these stores and shops closed And people were to forced to focus only on the things they really need? What if people were forced to spend time with themselves? Forced to reflect and focus on their health? And I’m not talking about just one town What if the whole world changed around? Everyone together All connected All going through the same thing All equally affected. What if instead of putting them to waste People appreciated the resources they had? Not constantly taking for granted What’s in their grocery bag? What if all this pollution started declining? With the highways mostly empty And fewer planes flying? What if families were forced to bond Whether or not they got along? And the glitter and glamour of a celebrity life What if you took away all the hype? And forced everyone to live the same way Forced to see they’re all alike. And what if parents watched their kids learn and grow? Not sending them away each day But keeping them at home? What if people were forced to connect In a place where countries don’t have boundaries Called ‘the internet.’ What if there was a deeper feeling of unity? With more people being aware of their communities? What if people had to redefine The things that they find fun Without being able to go to parties and clubs? What if an extroverted society Had to find a way to do things more quietly? Just for a while What if there was a collective pause? So the upcoming mornings Wouldn’t move so fast And people could reevaluate The way they were living in the past?” And so the sun When looking down Thought “What would happen If things changed around? Wonder how this would shake things up?” I guess we’ll find out in a couple of months.
