Here's a dispatch from a recent photo shoot in #DressingRoomNY, where our Collections team cloaked one mannequin in Valentina’s 1947 “Cleopatra” (worn by Katharine Cornell in a 1947 hit Broadway production) and another in NY couturier Charles James’s 1951 rose satin ball gown. “Both are very theatrical in their own way,” says fashion curator Phyllis Magidson of the pair of midcentury dresses. But Valentina’s form-defining costume presents quite a contrast to the freestanding architectural marvel that follows. And at 20 pounds of fabric, the James dress took 4 staff members to maneuver onto the form. It's the final week for Dressing Room, which we're keeping open for a special event next Saturday, 4/30; join us!

In #DressingRoomNY, a mannequin cloaked in an olive grey jumpsuit uniform might the next day don a floor-length fur-trimmed evening gown and a pair of bunny ears. The following week, the mannequin may find herself in an above-knee vermillion minidress, with a gaggle of museum staff and visitors alike quietly gushing over the ensemble. This week's blog takes you inside the most fashionable gallery of the City Museum, with a tour through our midcentury women's costumes by curator Phyllis Magidson.

Thanks to the Bronx Museum of the Arts for hosting the YMC earlier this month for a tour of their exhibition, Martin Wong: Human Instamatic. We stumbled upon some great pieces including one sketch of a familiar face, Chris "Daze" Ellis whose own work is currently on display at the Museum of the City of New York through May 1!

Waxing nostalgic about "the good old days" of St. Marks may be the hallmark of a real New Yorker; according to journalist Ada Calhoun, author of St. Marks Is Dead (W.W. Norton, 2015), every generation from 1890 to 1990 has done it. The 3-block East Village strip has undergone several massive transformations throughout its lifetime, and is in flux once again today.
