NEW EU AGENCY FOR THE SPACE PROGRAMME TO BE BASED IN CZECH CAPITAL PRAGUE

After 43 years since Czech Vladimír Remek reached the orbit and made then Czechoslovakia the third country in the world having the cosmonaut, the European Parliament has approved the creation of the EU Space Program (EUSPA) whose agency will be headquartered in Prague.

The goal of the project, which will run a budget of EUR 14.8 billion, will be the construction of a series of satellite systems that will provide data and services to public and private sectors. It will be an expansion of the European Global Navigation Satellite Systems Agency (GNSS) which has its headquarters in Prague and has been managing the EU’s Galileo satellite system for the past 9 years.

The program will be overseen by the European Commission in Brussels, and in addition to the EUSPA, will be in close collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA). The ESA will be heading up the construction of the satellite systems as well as researching new technologies.

Last year, the Czech Republic invested more than 1.2 billion CZK into the development of space technologies, including flexible solar panels for satellites, rocket parts, and satellite data processing. The Czech Republic also has its own Czech Space Office, which supports Czech space programs.

Following further negotiations, the official launch of the EU Space Program is set for June 22 in Brussels.

Jakou tvář má Josef Švejk? Čeští ilustrátoři hledají odpověď

Osudy dobrého vojáka Švejka slaví sto let od prvního vydání. Kanonickou výtvarnou podobu jim dal kreslíř Josef Lada, tvář Švejka ale v Haškově románu není tématem a většina Ladových ilustrací navíc vznikla až po autorově smrti. Jak může Švejk vypadat, když odhlédneme od...

Z Pištína až do New Yorku.

Another brilliant Czech architect: Jaroslav Josef Polívka

When Czechoslovakia was already occupied by N**i Germany, New York World´s Fair has opened its gates. One of its succesful pavillions was the Czechoslovak one - symbol of the country which ceased to exist, temporarily. It was designed and built by architect Jaroslav Josef Polívka, who was born today 135 years ago.
When the World War II erupted Polívka remained in the United States and became a professor at University of California at Berkeley as an expert on use of reinforced concrete and stress analysis.

In 1946 Polivka began to work with Frank Lloyd Wright collaborating on several major projects of which two were built, one of them being Guggenheim Musem in New York. The other design proposal which was not built was the Butterfly Bridge at the Southern Crossing of the San Francisco Bay.

J J Polivka (as he was known in the United States) died in Berkeley on 9 February 1960.

One of our final interviews for "Czechs in Chicago: A Home in the Heartland" -- Jim Peterik of the "Ides of March". So honored to chat with him about his childhood days--growing up in the Chicago Czech neighborhood of Berwyn, influenced as a young boy by playing w his Czech-Amer father's polka band...then ultimately onto Rock 'n Roll fame!
He generously spoke with us as he sang and played 'Eye of the Tiger', 'Vehicle' and other hits. Such a memorable day. Our entire crew was blown away--he rocked it!

🇨🇿Czech Antonín Raymond (1888-1976) was one of the most prominent 🙌 architects of the 20th century. He left his homeland early and settled first in the 🗽United States, where he worked on some of the most extraordinary buildings of the first quarter of that century, including Cass Gilbert's Woolworth Building in 🗽🍎New York City or with Frank Lloyd Wright on Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. He settled in⛩Tokyo and in the 1920s and 1930s he introduced modern architecture to Japan, where he built many important architectural masterpieces. He also built a unique church in the Philippines, St. Joseph the Worker, often known as Angry Christ Church after an iconic mural made by Phillippine-born Californian artist Alfonso Ossorio. If you want to learn more on Raymond´s work in the United States, Japan and elsewhere, the talk by Helena Čapková, Czech art expert based in Japan, is for you…

#Today it has been 37 years since the tragic death of Slovak photographer Ladislav Bielik - author of the timeless photo of a man facing the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in August 1968.

If there is one image that captures the frustration, hopelessness and yet determination to stand up to such unprovoked, brazen aggression, it´s this photograph.

Thank you for this legacy and for your incredible bravery to immortalize these events regardless of your own safety. 🙏 #democracy #freedom #sovereign #equality

Folks come to Carnegie Hall!
Folks, Thank you all for coming to our Album Launch. It was truly an amazing experience. Plamen Press is extremely fortunate to have such and amazing group of musicians performing. Lea Gilmore, Yaya, Christine Kharazian, Ian Jones, Tomas Drgon, Bob Rychlik and Ed Hrybyk did an amazing job. It was an evening we will never forget!
IT IS FINALLY HERE!!!. For the first time in history, songs by two of the greatest singer-songwriters the Czech Republic has ever seen, Karel Kryl and Jaromir Nohavica, have been recorded in English. The album is titled Steel Strings and Iron Curtains, and is available for Preorder at http://cart.sunkingrecords.com (site includes samples of Karel Kryl's Salome and Nohavica's Petersburg). The project is a collaboration between SunKing Records in Baltimore and Plamen Press in Washington DC. All songs are sung in English and are performed by The Yehla Collective, an international group of musicians from Armenia, the Czech and Slovak Republics and the US. The album will be officially released on November 17th to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution. Czech Folk Legend Vladimir Merta wrote about Steel Strings and Iron Curtains: “The production and each musicians’ contribution to this album is remarkable. I always wondered how our music, limited by its language barrier, would be accepted by ordinary folk outside of our borders, when it was predominantly meant for those here at home… These songs prove in today’s day and age that we (Czechs) have an ability to create traditional tunes embraced by a worldwide audience.” For more information about the album check out https://plamenpress.com/steel-strings-iron-curtains/
