Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art

Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art The Museum preserves and exhibits the art and culture of Tibet to a world audience.

Nestled into the side of Lighthouse Hill, the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art is a uniquely peaceful retreat. The Museum presents the art and culture of Tibet and the Himalayas to a world audience in order to educate and inspire others in the value of this significant cultural heritage. Established in 1945, the Museum was founded by the pioneering American woman Jacques Marchais (1887-1948)

, an important collector and respected expert in Tibetan art. Designed by Marchais, the rustic complex of fieldstone buildings resembles a Tibetan mountain monastery. These historic buildings represent the first Himalayan style architecture to be built in the United States, and it was the first museum in the world solely dedicated to Tibetan art. The surrounding landscape design, which Marchais named the 'Samadhi Garden,' feature a fish pond, meditation cells and many of her original plantings. The museum's distinctive setting highlights and enhances the experience of viewing the art within.

In this season of darkness, many religious festivals celebrate sacred light. The Jewish festival of Hannukah began last night, commemorating the ancient miracle in which the lamps of a menorah are said to have burned for eight days from a single dayโ€™s supply of oil.

In Himalayan cultures, butter lamps such as the ones found in our "Tibetan Buddhist Shrine Room", are used as offerings of light. The light itself serves as a metaphor for illuminating wisdom that dispels the darkness of ignorance. This metaphor of light as wisdom is a common image in many religious traditions and holidays. The flickering offerings of butter lamps evoke Hanukkah menorah lights and remind us of the season of giving.

Both Buddhist teachers and physicians are healers who aim to free individuals from suffering. Gurus help people overcome negative states of the mind and earn positive karma while physicians offer medical remedies and lifestyle advice to help people overcome physical and mental ailments. Tangtong Gyelpo served in both these roles. Tangtong Gyelpo, depicted in this work, invented medicines in pill form that cure epidemic diseases. Tibetan medicine doctors today still prescribe these precious pills.

Visit our exhibition, "Gateway to Himalayan Art," to explore how patrons sought the accumulation of merit and hoped for wealth, long life, and spiritual gains, all to be fulfilled through the ritual use of objects and commissioning works of art. This artwork is one of these commissioned works and depicts Ushnishavijaya at the center.

The deity Ushnishavijaya, or โ€œVictorious Crown Ornament,โ€ is a goddess of long life. She also removes obstacles, promotes well-being, and ensures environmental stability.

At the bottom center of this painting is a depiction of the deceased individual on whose behalf this painting was made. The small figure, wearing white, is shown seated on a lotus, indicating that the relatives who commissioned this painting wish that the merit generated by its creation will help the departed to be reborn in a pure realm of a buddha. The central figure of the painting was either the personal deity of the deceased or chosen for the painting on the advice of a religious master.

BOUT THE CLASS
Gentle/ Beginner yoga is a 1 hour class designed for those new to yoga or those looking for a softer gentler practice. It is open to all levels but especially useful if you are returning to yoga after a break, recovering from an injury or a mother returning to yoga practice 6 weeks postpartum. This class is taught in a supportive nurturing environment in which students feel safe and comfortable practicing at their own pace.

MEET KERRY
Kerry Sullivan has 17 years dance experience and has been practicing and teaching yoga for over 8 years. She received her 200hr certification through Yoga Alliance at Tula Yoga in 2015 and is Reiki II attuned, as well as an Advanced IET practitioner. In 2020 she received her birth and postpartum doula training through Healthy Women, Healthy Futures with DONA teachers Debra Pascali-Bonaro and Amadoma Bediako. She also completed the Radical Birth Keeper School of Free Birth Society in December of 2020. Her goal is to help her students connect to their divine potential, see their inner strength and find healing of mind, body and spirit through the practice of yoga, movement and energy healing.

ABOUT LESLIE
โ€œLeslie Rinchen-Wongmo is a textile artist, teacher, and author of Threads of Awakening: An American Womanโ€™s Journey into Tibetโ€™s Sacred Textile Art. A California girl who bought a one-way ticket to India and landed in a Tibetan sewing workshop next door to the Dalai Lama, she became one of few non-Tibetans to master the Buddhist art of silk appliquรฉ thangka. Trained by two of the finest living Tibetan appliquรฉ artists, Leslie learned to stitch bits of silk into elaborate figurative mosaics that bring the transformative images of Buddhist meditation to life.โ€

Thank you to Liza Weisstuch and the Washington Post for so eloquently bringing wider attention to Staten Island's "unsung treasures," including this museum. Weisstuch remarks that, "...itโ€™s the Noble Maritime Collection, one of the museums in Snug Harbor, that drove home just how connected the island is to the wider maritime world." We couldn't be prouder of that assessment of our work. We invite everyone to read about her trips to our beautiful borough and visit the places she recommends, which in addition to this museum, include Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden, Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art, National Lighthouse Museum, Historic Richmond Town, Flagship Brewing Company, and Killmeyer's Old Bavaria Inn, just to name a few! Visit Staten Island New York City Department of Cultural Affairs
So I lived just down the street from the museum for 30 years as a kid and never visited. Sad. I met my wife just up the street after a snowstorm on December 27, 1969. I recently sent Eric Ripert a message that he should visit. He's the owner of Le Bernardin in NY and a Buddhist.
We want to take this time each Friday to dive into our memories and start our story from the very beginning of how VISIT Staten Island came to be. We are so grateful to have worked with many cultural partners, and appreciate the friendships we have made along the way. with us and enjoy the ride!

VISIT Staten Island was happy to host the successful opening of the St. George Ferry Terminal Kiosk which allowed visitors and residents to inquire about Staten Island and explore the Greenest Borough of New York City! The opening on May 30th, 2018, saw over 200 visitors (not bad for a foggy day), with our volunteers directing people to many amazing Staten Island locations, translating for our Chinese visitors, and even helped lost tourists find their group and hotel. We also had special appearances of executive directors from the Alice Austen House Museum, Historic Richmond Town, Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art, Staten Island Museum, Staten Island NFP, and a friend from the Staten Island Zoo.

Deputy Borough President Ed Burke also made an appearance, and our friends from Empire Outlets NYC.

While this program is on pause, we are so proud of how it expanded and flourished over the next two years. Visitors can still get all the information about Staten Island from our website at www.visitstatenisland.com, and we hope to return to the kiosk in person sooner rather than later!

Special shout out to Staten Island Academy for sending four of their amazing seniors to assist in the opening that day. Also, we must thank Downtown Staten Island for the loan of their photo op which was generously made and donated by 5050 Skatepark!
