What old version of you are you ready to let go of?

Growth looks like loss, right up until it doesn't. Shedding is about the point where the old version has to come off, even before the new one feels familiar. What's underneath finally gets room to breathe.

It's a 24 × 36 one-of-one on aluminum from Unapologetic Faces: The Cost of Being Seen.

What few seconds changed your whole life?

A whole life turns on a handful of seconds. Seconds stays with the instant just before everything changes. It's the part we usually understand only after it's already gone.

It's a 24 × 36 one-of-one on aluminum from Unapologetic Faces: The Cost of Being Seen.

Who gets to see the real you?

Everyone has a second face. Few will show it. Two-Faced puts the self we present beside the self we protect. Neither one is treated as the lie. They're two parts of the same person.

It's a 24 × 36 one-of-one on aluminum from Unapologetic Faces: The Cost of Being Seen.

What gets louder for you at 2 AM?

Nobody lies to themselves at 2 AM. That's the hour when the noise drops out and whatever you've been avoiding gets louder. 2:00 AM is about that face, the one that shows up when there's nobody left to perform for.

It's a 24 × 36 one-of-one framed work from Unapologetic Faces: The Cost of Being Seen.

What are you done apologizing for?

Your face tells the whole story before you say a word. Every person, place, loss, win and mistake leaves something behind. Love Your Face is about carrying all of it without apologizing for what it made visible.

It's the piece at the center of Unapologetic Faces: The Cost of Being Seen, a 24 × 36 one-of-one framed work.

What do you want people to see in your face besides the cracks?

Everyone goes through something, rich or poor. This series started as an idea I called Crack Faces. I was meeting people going through big changes in their lives, and when we talked I kept seeing fracture and beauty in the same face.

That's me at the opening of Unapologetic Faces: The Cost of Being Seen, March 6 at the Bernie Wohl Center at Goddard Riverside. More than 300 people registered for that night.

This is my hallway at home in Harlem.

Presence Undiminished and Gold Doesn't Heal are on the walls, and Tears Flowing is at the far end. Time takes plenty, and Presence Undiminished is about what it never took. Gold Doesn't Heal is the opposite story: the surface looks expensive, and the wound underneath is still there.

Both are 24 × 36 one-of-one framed works from Unapologetic Faces: The Cost of Being Seen, matted in a black wood frame with an Acrylite front instead of glass. Tears Flowing is a 24 × 36 one-of-one on aluminum. Which one would you stop at?

Gold gets you there. It doesn't tell you what happens after.

Golden Temptation and Golden Temptation II are companion works. The first one is about wanting something you already know may be bad for you. The gold pulls first and leaves the question behind. Golden Temptation II, the one shown here, picks up after the chase. A man and a woman, both marked by the same hunger. The eyes are held back on purpose, because when someone's starving for fame or fortune, the hunger shows in the mouth first.

Both are 36 × 24 one-of-one aluminum works from Unapologetic Faces: The Cost of Being Seen. What did you chase that stopped being enough once you had it?

My Black gay friends and I had a saying back in the '90s and 2000s: they'll sleep with you, but they won't date you.

I wrote a whole book about that. Unmasking Desires is about dating white men as a Black gay man, back when profiles on the apps said "no blacks" out loud. It's also about a hookup in the Bronx that ended with me in a jail cell for 30 hours over an accusation that wasn't true.

The new edition is rolling out on Amazon this week. Kindle, paperback and hardcover. Every chapter ends with questions, so bring it to your book club or your man.
