Final days to experience O**M by Roxanne Jackson (👁 👁 👁) at (The Pit).

Named for the Latin word for egg, the exhibition explores creatures born ready to survive—from snakes and lizards to birds and mythical hybrids like harpies. These beings populate Jackson’s strange, shape-shifting world, where ceramic forms blur the boundaries between human and animal, beauty and horror, and life and decay.

As Jackson explains, “Showing both of these extremes [offers] a more honest depiction of the human experience.”

Transforming familiar forms into something feral and uncanny, Jackson’s sculptures explore the instincts that drive survival and the constant evolution of identity.

Don’t miss the final days of O**M, on view through October 22, 2026.

From digital rendering to fired ceramic: the making of Nature 19.

How does a sculpture move from a computer screen into the physical world? This process-focused look at Nicolas Touron’s (Nicolas Touron) Nature 19, a collaboration with artist Amy Lemaire (Amy Lemaire), highlights some of the stages of 3D clay printing—from digital design and rendering to the printer’s layered construction and the final firing. 

Along the way, technology meets the unpredictability of clay, as material behavior and technical adjustments help shape the finished work. As Touron writes, “Introducing chance allows the process to remain open, responsive, and materially driven.” 

His practice brings traditional ceramic techniques into dialogue with emerging technologies—and places storytelling and intuition at the center of the process.

When traditional firing techniques meet individual artistic visions.

Celebrating 30 years of Galerie Metzger (Angelika Metzger), Declaration of Love brings together international artists exploring the expressive possibilities of wood-fired ceramics.

The exhibition features works by Dinosaur Teabowl (), the collaborative practice of Lisa Reitmeier and Benedikt Hipp, whose hand-formed vessels often include “surfaces of exceptional depth and cosmically iridescent, metallic tones”; Jeff Shapiro (Jeff Shapiro), represented by sculptural works that subvert conventional vessel forms and are born from a desire to “‘let go’ rather than try to force something to happen”; and Tae Sungyong (태성룡), who embraces fire and air harmonious creative collaborators that allow him to imprint clay with what he describes as “infinite landscapes of the cosmos.”

Across these distinct approaches, wood-firing becomes more than a technique: it is an active force in shaping each work’s surface and expression.

The chemistry of lava glazes.

In Lava Glazes: The Science of Surprise, ceramic artist Maria Loram (Maria Loram) explores the science behind the cratered, volcanic surfaces that define her work.

Through systematic testing and careful adjustments to glaze chemistry, Loram investigates how silicon carbide generates bubbles, how melt viscosity shapes the final texture, and how small changes in a recipe can transform a surface.

“That is what I love most about lava glazes: they turn glaze chemistry into something you can actually see and touch,” Loram says.

Her process balances scientific precision with artistic experimentation and the inherent unpredictability of chemical reactions, creating ceramics that seem to grow, crack, and erupt from within.

Tōgei: True to Clay, Free with Form at the American Museum of Ceramic Art (AMOCA American Museum of Ceramic Art) explores the breadth of contemporary Japanese ceramics, with a selection of sculptural and functional works organized by use—from tea bowls and vessels for food and drink to vases for ikebana and boxes for incense.

Rooted in traditions of practical use, these works also demonstrate how form, surface, and material can transform everyday objects. The exhibition highlights the relationship between ceramics, nature, and the rituals woven into daily life.

Celebrating 30 years of contemporary ceramics, Galerie Metzger marks its anniversary with Liebeserklärung/Declaration of Love, an exhibition devoted to the elemental process of wood-firing. 

Bringing together works in which earth, fire, and the artist uniquely converge, the exhibition highlights the distinctive surfaces and forms that emerge when chance and control, heat and time, surface and depth coalesce into singular forms of expression.

What do contemporary ceramics look like in the world’s ceramic capital? 

The 2026 International Academy of Ceramics Congress (AIC-IAC) brought together an extraordinary range of ceramic work from around the world. Congress attendees explored exhibitions showcasing the diversity of contemporary ceramic practice—from the IAC Members, International Residency, and New Members exhibitions to the Jingdezhen International Ceramic Art Biennale and the Jingdezhen Ceramic University Museum.

Members highlighted the breadth and quality of the work on view: “The quality of the works was extraordinary, and I found the overall level exceptionally high,” IAC member Jacqueline Schapiro (Jacqueline Schapiro) said of the Biennale.
