For our #AfricanDiaspora Film Club, weare discussing #LorraineHansberry: Sighted Eyes/ Feeling Heart on October 11th! RSVP today in our bio or moadsf.org/calendar to join this virtual film experience.

Sighted Eyes/Feeling Heart is the first-ever feature documentary about Lorraine Hansberry, the visionary playwright who authored the groundbreaking #ARaisinintheSun. An overnight sensation, the play transformed the American theater and has long been considered a classic, yet the remarkable story of the #playwright faded from view. With this documentary, filmmaker Tracy Heather Strain resurrects the Lorraine Hansberry we have forgottenaa passionate artist, committed activist and sought-after public intellectual who waged an outspoken and defiant battle against injustice in 20th-century America. The film reveals Hansberryas prescient works tackling race, human rights, womenas equality and sexuality that anticipated social and political movements on the horizon. Lorraine Hansberry lived much of her 34 years guided by a deep sense of responsibility to others, proclaiming: aOne cannot live with sighted eyes and feeling heart and not know or react to the miseries which afflict this world.a Video by @pbs.

Art & words by artist Titus Kaphar:

I
can not
sell
you
this
painting.
A
In her expression, I see the Black mothers who are unseen, and rendered helpless in this fury against their babies.
As I listlessly wade through another cycle of violence against Black people,
I paint a Black mothera
eyes closed,
furrowed brow,
holding the contour of her loss.
A
Is this what it means for us?
Are black and loss
analogous colors in America?
If Malcolm could not fix it,
if Martin could not fix it,
if Michael,
Sandra,
Trayvon,
Tamir,
Breonna and
Now George Floyda
can be murdered
and nothing changesa
wouldnat it be foolish to remain hopeful?
Must I accept that this is what it means to be Black
in America?
A
Do
not
ask
me
to be
hopeful.
A
I have given up trying to describe the feeling of knowing that I can not be safe in the country of my birtha
How do I explain to my children that the very system set up to protect others could be a threat to our existence?
How do I shield them from the psychological impact of knowing that for the rest of our lives we will likely be seen as a threat,
and for that
We may die?
A MacArthur wonat protect you .
A Yale degree wonat protect you .
Your well-spoken plea will not change hundreds of years of institutionalized hate.
You will never be as eloquent as Baldwin,
you will never be as kind as Kinga
So,
isnat it only reasonable to believe that there will be no
change
soon?
A
And so those without hopea
Burn.
A
This Black mother understands the fire.
Black mothers
understand despair.
I can change NOTHING in this world,
but in paint,
I can realize hera.
This brings me solacea
not hope,
but solace.
She walks me through the flames of rage.
My Black mother rescues me yet again.
I want to be sure that she is seen.
I want to be certain that her story is told.
And so,
this time
America must hear her voice.
This time
America must believe her.
A
One
Black
motheras
loss
WILL
be
memorialized.
This time
I will not let her go.
A
I
can not
sell
you
this
painting.

Rest in Power, Justice Ginsburg. You spent your life fighting for justice and equality, fighting for all of us. Now, we must continue that fight in your honor.

Redactiona, by Titus Kaphar and Reginald Dwayne Betts is their first artistic collaboration. This series of silk screen and etchings on paper focuses on the ways state and federal court systems exploit and erase the poor and incarcerated from public consciousness. Betts creates poetic redactions from legal documents filed by the CRC (Civil Rights Corp), on behalf of men and women incarcerated for a failure to pay court fines and fees. Layered within these works, Kaphar provides etched portraits of these individuals with disorienting effect.

The portfolio pictured above houses works on archival paper, adhered to metal apagesa, bound in blackened bronze book, and is displayed on a walnut lectern.

Redaction is supported by Agnes Gund and the @art4justicefund . The show first exhibited at MoMA PS1 , March 2019, and was curated by Sarah Suzuki.

View this work and others from the Pleading Freedom Exhibition at the NXTHVN Gallery. Pleading Freedom is supported by @gagosian and is open to the public Thursday- Sunday, 2PM-6PM through September 26.

I was so thrilled and honored when the Alvin Ailey dancers chose to create a dance in relation to "The Dinner Party", my symbolic history of women in Western Civilization now permanently housed at the Brooklyn Museum. I thought I'd share this moving performance with my Instagram followers. What a wonderful tribute to remind us that women's rights are human rights, especially now when women are bearing most of the burden of the pandemic as they try and balance work, children and family with little or no help

My friend the artist @leonardobenzant 💔✊🏿✌🏾

I personally owe this man a lot! He is the reason father is still alive! When my father was incarcerated in Atlanta, undergoing several (experimental) procedures against his will, because the prison refused to transfer him to a proper hospital or to let us see him or even know the severity of his health conditions, John Lewis stepped in to fight for him. My father was on his death bed due to unclean foods prepared in kitchens infested with rodent fecal matter, inhumane living conditions and rogue doctors with long histories of medical malpractice suits being given free range over prisoners. My grandmother went to the prison to demand to see my father and they told her that they couldnat find him and possibly he escaped. But in actuality they were hiding him so she couldnat see the horrible condition he was in. He had lost so much weight, he was unrecognizable to me when I finally saw him. The rage I felt in that moment is still so visceral. He was literally hours from death when My grandmother called John Lewis and he responded immediately. He did not know us from a can of paint but he treated my family like we were valuable and worthy of care and concern. He personally saw to it that my father was transferred to a proper hospital to receive medical attention and thatas the reason he is still alive today. John Lewis was a real one , a true humanitarian who dedicated his life to his people, and to justice and equality for everyone. May Allah be pleased with him. May he rise in peace and power #longlivejohnlewis

Those in power who want us to focus on looting and property damage instead of the thousands peacefully protesting are trying to distract us from the terrible violence that engulfs the lives of working people every day. As Coretta Scott King reminded us, violence takes many forms.
