Please join us for two upcoming events in conjunction with the virtual exhibition “Etching & Erasure: The Colonialist Photography of Edward S. Curtis (1907-1930)” curated by the M.A. Museum Administration graduate students. This exhibition invites viewers to critically examine the problematic history of Edward Curtis’s documentation of Indigenous cultures. The exhibition features 24 images from Curtis’s series “The North American Indian,” focusing on lesser-known works that highlight the exploitation and ethical challenges of his colonialist approach to photography.

Next Wednesday, March 19th at 6pm — Join us for a virtual curator-led walkthrough of the online exhibition, curated by St. John’s M.A. Museum Administration students Kacey Bejado, Owen Lockwood, Zachary Pablo, and Liberty Sova.

Next Thursday, March 20th at 1:50pm — Join us at the Yeh Gallery for “PUSHING THE NARRATIVE: In Conversation with Etching and Erasure, on the Effects of Edward Curtis’s Photography,” a conversation with Drew Woodson, Youth and Education Coordinator at the American Indian Community House in New York. This talk will explore the critical legacy of Edward S. Curtis’s photography.

Drew Woodson is the Youth and Education Coordinator for the American Indian Community House. Drew is a member of the Te-Moak Band of Western Shoshone people of Nevada. A writer, director, and educator, Drew has been devoted to the practice of Native representation in media, arts, and academia. As an educator Drew has worked with the Native Student Development Office at UC Berkeley, the Native American Youth Summer Camps with Alter Theater, and most recently at New York University.

Don’t miss this mixed media sculptures, costumes and video by aricoco—students who are interested in participating in a weaving workshop with aricoco on Monday 3/17, please see the info in the fourth slide!

aricoco
“Worker who didn’t get to be Queen,” 2023
Mixed media (fabric, vinyl, leather scraps, faux-fur), 66 inches in length

In her work, aricoco examines the non-hierarchical social structures of ants, mirroring their cooperative strategies through wearable sculptures, installations, and performances. She channels her personal anxieties—particularly a childhood fear of insects—into art that investigates self-fortification, community-building, and the ways humans can learn from nature’s intricate systems.

Stop by and view this painting by Nianxin Li

Nianxin Li
“Warmth and Coldness,” 2024
Acrylic on canvas, 36 x 48 inches

Nianxin Li’s biomorphic paintings depict snail-like figures floating in cinematic, neon-lit environments, their iridescent surfaces reflecting a mysterious world. Bathed in toxic hues reminiscent of high-gloss sports cars, her work evokes a sense of fragility and transformation, where interior and exterior spaces exist in fluid, ever-shifting states.

Originally from Chongqing, China, Nianxin Li holds degrees from the Florence Academy of Fine Arts and the School of Visual Arts in New York. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at Tang Contemporary Art, Chambers Fine Art, and chi K11 Art Museum in Shanghai.
