Artist: Jung S Kim
This exhibition introduces three Contemporary Korean photographers whose practices revolve around masquerading in self-portraits—Chan-Hyo Bae, Jung S Kim, and Youngho Kang. They question the hybridization of cultures in the age of globalization. Using masquerade to explore their individual personas, they design props, costumes, make-up, and hairdos to create staged images. Fluidity and artificiality, as manifested by their ever-changing appearances, draw attention to the superficiality of biological and cultural markers. By blurring the boundaries of gender (all three, but especially Bae and Kim) and race (Bae and Kang), these artists challenge and destabilize conventional notions of culture, race, and gender as determinants of personal identity.

That sounds like a fascinating process of turning initial design traces into art pieces and comparing them with completed works in public projects! It must be intriguing to hear the artist‘s explanations along the way.

Blue Dragon Wins the Powerball>
30” x 30”
Watercolor on mulberry paper
$7,500

Since ancient times in Asia, a dragon has been a mythical animal symbolizing supreme power. It controls wind and rain. In cultures that depended on them for survival, wind and rain were necessary for bountiful harvests of crops and fish. Thus, a dragon has the ultimate ability to bring blessings and defeat disasters.
The source of the dragon’s power is the cintamani, an otherworldy ball that is said to manifest whatever one wishes, bestow absolute truth and knowledge, and give the power to rule the world.
A dragon begins as a carp or snake on Earth. Only after a thousand years and, more importantly, great efforts to develop itself and leap into the sky, can it turn into a dragon. Once a dragon, it must harness the power of a cintamani. If a dragon loses its cintamani or greedily tries to hold two, the dragon turns into a monster serpent and falls back to Earth. Therefore, a dragon must have the ability to both win and carefully manage a cintamani. The Blue Dragon in the painting shows such ability, effortlessly harnessing the cintamini with its whiskers.
The painting represents leaping into the sky and achieving your dreams, as the Blue Dragon did.
