New York Academy of Art

New York Academy of Art Through major exhibitions, a lively speaker series and an ambitious education program, the Academy serves as a creative and intellectual center for all artists dedicated to highly skilled figurative and representational art.
(172)

For over thirty years, the New York Academy of Art has been the place where talented emerging artists develop a personal vision by building upon the enduring traditions of figurative painting, drawing and sculpture to create vital contemporary art. Each year the Academy is home to more than one hundred artists pursuing the master of fine arts degree, as well as hundreds of individuals enrolled in our continuing education program. Founded in 1982 by Andy Warhol and other influential artists, collectors and patrons, the Academy is the first and most significant graduate school in the United States to focus on the human body. Its distinguished faculty, visiting critics, lecturers and master class instructors include renowned artists Eric Fischl, Jenny Saville, Will Cotton and Vincent Desiderio and critic Donald Kuspit.

Mission: The New York Academy of Art is a graduate school that combines intensive technical training in the fine arts with active critical discourse. We believe that rigorously trained artists are best able to realize their artistic vision. Academy students are taught traditional methods and techniques and encouraged to use these skills to make vital contemporary art. The Academy serves as a creative and intellectual center for all artists dedicated to highly skilled, conceptually aware figurative and representational art.

Quarantine notes by one of our faculty members, @wadeschuman
I am extremely fortunate to be up in Maine caretaking my elderly parents and staying in my mother’s studio which is in an old barn and looks out on a tidal salt marsh. Because the studio functions as my living place, I am working at the moment mainly on a series of large ball point pen drawings on prepared paper. The images are of local animals I have seen that have a deep connection to me with Maine. They also relate to a polyptych I have been working on back in New York. I love the meditative quality of working in ball point, the rich oiliness of the ink, the fact that each stroke is for keeps, and the calligraphic possibilities of the medium. I like that a humble and common implement can achieve the monumentality and intensity of engraving. I love the gentle sound the pen makes on the paper, and how the marks relate to the fur and gesture of the animals. I am grateful to be here at this time to assit my parents and to work in the studio that my mother used for so many years and to see her drawings on the walls and the salt marsh outside the window as I work.

There is no doubt that the world is facing a surreal situation right now. With many young people sequestered at home, unable to attend school, our youth need us more than ever. To offer a ray of light in this dark time, we are spreading the word about CITYarts Pieces for Peace, which can be created anywhere at any time. CITYarts Pieces for Peace is a collection of (6" x 6") artworks, made by youth in over 100 countries, which answer the question "What does Peace look like to you?" in the visual form. If you know a young person in need of inspiration or engagement, encourage them to get involved from the comfort of their own home by clicking this link (https://bit.ly/2IYtYBi) to download our template and join the movement. For more information on the project check out CITYarts' website and our Online Exhibition (https://bit.ly/2UjsC9A).
