A Homeland Caught in the Act of Singing
By Architect and Writer Imad Darouich — New York
I watched the concert twice.
The first time, I could not prove I was in New York.
My body was in the chair.
But my heart had left without papers.
It crossed the border inside a mawwal.
When asked its destination, it produced a key.
They said: the house no longer exists.
It said: that is why I carry the key.
A Clerk Behind the Ribs
An old clerk lives inside me.
Fear appointed him long ago.
His job is to inspect moments of joy.
Whenever I smile, he demands a document.
Whenever I long for home, he opens an inquiry.
That night, he heard Assala.
He stood up to stop the sound.
He found the door turning into a window.
He searched for the stamp of prohibition.
The stamp was applauding.
For the first time, the office ceased to function.
And Syria entered my chest.
A Witness Unable to Testify
I did not fully see the concert the first time.
A tear obscured the orchestra.
An old house stood in front of the singer.
I asked it to move aside.
It said: I have waited for this voice longer than you.
So I let it stay.
Demolished houses have seniority in longing.
Windows that have lost their walls have a right to watch.
The concert ended.
I remained unable to describe it.
I had been a witness.
But my heart had hidden the evidence.
The Second Time… I Brought a Ruler
I am an architect.
I have spent my life persuading emptiness to become a home.
And persuading walls to leave room for a door.
I returned to the concert with an examining eye.
I wanted to know how this effect had been built.
What supports a note?
How does a mawwal bear so much distance?
Who authorized this silence to be so deep?
I raised my ruler to the melody.
It stretched all the way to Damascus.
I set it back on the table.
It was wet.
A Voice That Defies the Plan
Everything inside me had been designed to withstand sorrow.
Thick walls.
Heavy doors.
Emergency exits leading to no one.
Then Assala sang.
And the building developed a fault.
Light began entering through the places of pain.
A wall I had considered essential came down.
Behind it, I found my laughter.
I had grown much older while it waited there.
It did not reproach me.
It asked me to open the window.
When the Earth Was Summoned Onstage
The dabke struck the earth.
And the earth answered beneath my feet.
I was in New York.
How, then, did these tiles tremble?
I pressed my ear against the distance.
I heard neighborhoods calling to one another.
And stairways descending in search of their people.
Onstage, one shoulder supported another.
And the solitary step learned its plural form.
That is how I saw Syria.
Voices keeping their names.
And finding room within one song.
An Application for Permission to Rejoice
Halfway through a song, a smile caught me unprepared.
I felt guilty.
I turned toward my sorrows.
They were sitting beside me.
Not one was missing.
I asked: am I allowed?
They did not answer.
They shifted a little of their weight.
And left me room to breathe.
Then I understood something.
Even sorrow suffocates when we close the windows.
Even memory needs air.
The Final Report
That is why I watched the concert twice.
The first time, I did not know what had happened to me.
The second time, I found the thread.
I followed it from Assala’s voice.
To the orchestra.
To the dancers’ feet.
To that sealed door inside me.
There I stopped.
The clerk of fear was sitting on the floor.
His papers lay scattered.
He asked me: what shall I write in the report?
I said: write what you saw.
He said: they will not believe it.
I said: write.
On this night, during the broadcast of a concert,
a door opened in a New York apartment.
A man burdened with years walked through it.
And entered his home in Damascus.
He never left his chair.
And the chair was no longer where it had been.
