Alfred Jensen, Interlacing Colors I, 1959. Oil on canvas, 46 x 40 inches. Collection of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC.

“Alfred Jensen studied painting at the San Diego Fine Arts School and in Munich under Hans Hofmann.
After moving to the United States in 1934, his patron Saidie Alder May encouraged him to pursue his interest in color theory and pattern. Jensen's intricately organized diagrams reflect his distinctive conceptual approach, begun in the late 1950s when he started to refine his wide-ranging studies of systems and philosophies—from theories of color and light, mathematics, and the Mayan calendar, to scientific formulations—into multicolored checkerboards. He used mathematical systems to construct two-dimensional grid paintings and demonstrate color theories, but the work itself is metaphorical, referencing pre-Colombian and Asian cultures, textiles, and divination.” -

Baker Overstreet's graphic paintings traverse the arcane corners of camp nostalgia by exploring absurd, nonsensical and failing systems that happily, and absurdly, lead to nowhere and back again.

Overstreet’s solo show ‘Brain Games’ is live on Artsy thru 8/17. Link in bio!

Frik-Shuhn: Syncopation

An Artsy-exclusive presentation January 12 - February 23

Flynn Fine Art is delighted to present Frik-Shuhn: Syncopation by New York City-based painter . Our first -exclusive exhibition of 2022 features eleven new paintings from the artist’s Frik-Shuhn series, which explores the nature of visual perception through geometric abstraction.

For over a decade Spoerndle has been exploring the malleable pictorial space of abstract painting, gradually developing a visual language reduced to geometric shapes and the primary colors. In Spoerndle’s lexicon, these foundational shapes and colors are a metaphor for the essential elements of perception, i.e., simplified components of a complex system of interactions that comprise our visual landscape. Utilizing these building blocks the artist constructs generative systems founded on pattern and repetition to create a visual rhythm that lends itself to fluctuating figure/ground relationships.

Charlie green, Brooklyn Peace - Di$ney Laws, 2020. Found paper, acrylic, ink and varnish on canvas, 48 x 36 inches.

Self-taught street artist creates his large scale works through through an additive/reductive process. First, green hunts advertisements, show bills, etc. on the streets, collecting them as fragments or in near totality. Bringing them back to his studio, he then categorizes each piece and collages them into a composition on canvas. green then subjects each work to rounds of reduction…beating them with a stick, scraping them with a ruler or tearing pieces off by hand. The overall effect of green’s decollage paintings mirrors their inspiration: the battered surfaces of our urban landscapes.
