The Hart "Peek-a-Boo" Cabin was just featured in Twin Cities Metro - great article! There are more photos in the print edition if you can get your hands on one.

Soon to be published, the Peek-a-Boo Cabin is the latest custom house completed by Lazor Office (the FlatPak house peeps). The cabin is up off the ground to leave the land as is and put you up in the trees with an elevated view of the lake below. The house is like a giant porch with little boxes, [the private spaces] set between a roof and floor with S/M/L gaps between. This open and close sequence frames peaks of the world outside. Light and shadow are part of this wandering, discovery around the corner kind of place. The owner and his family tell us “life in the gap” is pretty cool. There’s a get away gap with a desk, open air covered gaps to watch summer rain storms, a gap for outdoor showers and a big gap for everyone to hang out in, cook and drink Leinenkugels (the local beer, lemon wedge required). In the bedrooms, the world is viewed through deep window boxes, a tight framed view, like a medieval castle window. This creates a strong sense of privacy and coziness.

Materials are Cypress, both smooth and rough sawn, birch plywood and glass. Space and materials that are just enough and not more than needed.

If you didn't already catch it in this month's issue of Dwell...check it out. Is it time to start planning for your summer getaway?

Prefab construction simplified the building process of this northern Wisconsin summer home, where all materials required ferrying across Lake Superior.

Just in - photos taken of Jowey's FlatPak on the New Jersey side of the George Washington Bridge. 3 bedrooms, 2 baths. Rumors are Snookie has her eyes on this little gem, but only after the siding is swapped out for some pink velour.

The latest prefab concept from the FlatPak studio – the Week’nder. Yup, a get away house to the great outdoors. The first Week’nder was installed on beautiful Madeline Island in Lake Superior this past July 2010. It made the ferry journey and upon landing at the terminal, the Week’nder was greeted by the Islanders with great interest and questions such as, “what the hell is that?” We replied, “it’s a modern prefab house concept.” That was met with “oh” and a long silence.

We think its pretty cool and yes, this concept is in place and it can be yours. Let us know if you are interested.

The Desert Boulder House is a custom house by Lazor Office in 1997.
The house is a loose organization of private spaces rendered in heavy stucco forms and the public use spaces that lie between them. Retractable floor to ceiling glass opens these public spaces to the Sonoran desert and mountains beyond, transforming the house into an expansive, wandering open air porch which blurs one’s sense of where the house ends and the desert begins.
The house feels more like a man made landscape than an identifiable “house.” The field of enormous boulders that the house sits within was the originating inspiration and organizing principal for the dwelling. The spaces between these enormous boulders are very cool and very pleasant to hang out in. They make you feel secure and protected while in the big outdoor space of the desert as they simultaneously frame, or bracket, the expansive desert into specific, manageable views. Add a roof for shade and you have an ideal desert hang out.
This one has an ice maker. Most excellent.
