Integrity is often tested when no one is watching, when the easier choice and the right choice are not the same. Medal of Honor Recipient Robert M. Patterson’s words remind us that character is built through the standards we refuse to compromise. Rivalry can inspire excellence, but leadership is measured by what we carry beyond the competition.

This December, Worthy Rivals: Leadership Beyond the Field returns on the eve of the Army-Navy game for a meaningful conversation with Medal of Honor Recipients and other distinguished leaders about the values that shape how we lead, serve, and respond when the stakes are high.

The event looks beyond the scoreboard to the principles that endure: courage, integrity, commitment, sacrifice, citizenship, and patriotism. These values influence how leaders make decisions, support others, and remain grounded in purpose when the path forward is difficult.

At its heart, Worthy Rivals is about more than tradition. It is about using the lessons of service and character to help develop leaders who are prepared to strengthen their teams, communities, and country.

Today we honor the birthdays of two Medal of Honor Recipients whose actions reflect extraordinary courage and commitment to others.

During four days of intense combat in Vietnam, U.S. Army Special Forces medic Gary Michael Rose repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire to treat and evacuate wounded soldiers. Despite suffering multiple injuries himself, he continued providing lifesaving care and helped save numerous lives.

While serving with the U.S. Marine Corps in Afghanistan, Kyle Carpenter moved toward an enemy gr***de in an effort to shield a fellow Marine from the blast. He was severely wounded, but his actions saved his fellow Marine’s life.

Their stories remind us that leadership is often revealed through selfless choices made in moments of extraordinary consequence. Today, we honor their birthdays and the examples of character they continue to provide.

When Ryan Pitts received the call that he would be awarded the Medal of Honor, his first response was not a sense of recognition, but remembrance. The day for which he was being honored was also a day of profound loss, when nine of his fellow soldiers gave their lives.

Over time, Pitts came to understand the Medal differently. He sees it not as something that belongs to him alone, but as a memorial to those who served beside him and a representation of the sacrifice shared by everyone who was part of that day.

His perspective speaks to a deeper truth about service and leadership: no one stands alone. Behind every moment of courage are people who have sacrificed, supported, and served alongside one another, often without recognition.

For Pitts, the Medal is a reminder to honor those contributions and to never lose sight of the people behind the service.

For more than two centuries, the United States Navy has been shaped by generations of men and women committed to serving something greater than themselves.

That legacy is reflected in the Navy Medal of Honor and in the stories of Recipients whose actions demonstrate what courage, commitment, integrity, sacrifice, citizenship, and patriotism can look like when the stakes are highest.

At the National Medal of Honor Center for Leadership, those stories are more than history. They are lessons in character that can challenge each of us to consider how we lead, serve others, and respond when responsibility calls.

On the U.S. Navy’s birthday, we honor all who have served and the values they continue to carry forward.

Admiral William H. McRaven reflects on a lesson that stayed with him throughout his career. While stationed in the Philippines, senior leader Dave Tash entrusted him with the responsibility of leading a mission rather than giving him every answer.

That trust required McRaven to think critically, take ownership of each decision, and understand the weight of responsibility that comes with leadership. He never forgot the lesson.

Leadership is not only about making decisions. It is about having the integrity to own them, the judgment to act with purpose, and the character to be accountable for what follows.

The National Medal of Honor Center for Leadership is hosting four hands-on, high-impact events across Charleston featuring Medal of Honor Recipient Ryan Pitts. Students can register for one event or attend all four!

Patriots Point, Mount Pleasant
Tour the USS Yorktown with Ryan Pitts, hear his incredible story from Wanat, Afghanistan, and race through a below-deck scavenger hunt.

🎙️ Sunday, Oct 11 (10:00 AM – 12:30 PM) | Preparing for Your Toughest Moments
Francis Marion Hotel, Downtown Charleston
A leadership panel and lunch featuring Ryan Pitts, retired Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Leo Williams III, and Truist executive Amy Collins. (Parents are welcome to reserve seats for this one, too!)
