Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum

Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum Located in a rustic 19th century building which served as a lock tender's house on the Morris Canal, the Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum offers an entertaining and enlightening look at the history of New Jersey's largest lake. Step back to a time when the lake was actually two bodies of water and the Lenape lived along its shores. Learn of the building of the famous Morris Canal and the forming of modern day Lake Hopatcong, its main source of water. Travel back to the era when the Lake was a tourist mecca and some 40 hotels and rooming houses graced its shores. Relive the days when thousands flocked to Bertrand Island Amusement Park for dancing and "nickel nights." In an age before jets, before air conditioning and before super highways, Lake Hopatcong was a major northeast resort. Within easy reach of large cities to the east, the Lake's size and setting at over 900 feet above sea level made it a perfect resort. From the 1880's through the 1930's the Lake welcomed thousands each year, including leaders in government, industry and entertainment. Lower daytime temperatures and cool evenings made Lake Hopatcong a welcome respite from the urban centers to the east. Although other northwestern New Jersey towns were developed as resorts during this period, Lake Hopatcong quickly outdistanced all local rivals in popularity. While these other resorts shared Lake Hopatcong's proximity to the urban centers of the east, they could not match the lake's size or the ease with which it could be reached by rail.

On Saturday May 18 the museum will be open from 6:30 to 8:30pm for a special event. In his years prior to achieving success, noted American artist and author Eric worked at various summer jobs on the lake, including at local boat yards. In 1936 he presented a detailed color drawing of the lake as a gift to Nick Steneck, owner of Hockenjos Boat Company. The drawing was passed down to Nick Steneck, Jr. and his wife Peg, who have now generously donated it to the Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum. The Stenecks will be traveling from Michigan to unveil this wonderful museum addition at 7:00pm.

Hopatcong School District

On March 5, 2019, students involved in Durban Avenue School’s Gifted and Talented program had an opportunity to visit the Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum. The idea for the trip arose from one of the student’s independent study project about Castle Edward, one of forty former hotels which surrounded the lake. While fifth grade student, Anthony Quinn, talked about Castle Edward’s proximity to his own house, the other students began talking and asking questions about the hotel. Soon it was decided that the group should visit the local museum to find out more about the rich history which surrounds Lake Hopatcong. When students returned to Durban Avenue School, they were asked to share some of the facts that impressed them the most. Responses ranged from Castle Edward being inspired by a 17th century castle to the details of ice farming on Lake Hopatcong and the lake’s role as the origin of the Morris Canal. Students were excited to learn of many famous people who used to visit the Lake area including Thomas Edison and Babe Ruth. Several students shared their musical talent as they were permitted to play Joe Cook’s piano. Many thanks to Mrs. Christina Munoz and Mrs. Hilary Wolf for chaperoning this successful trip and to Mr. Marty Kane and Mrs. Lisa Hirschfeld for being amazing museum guides.

From our friends at the Canal Society

In honor of Black History Month, the Canal Society profiles James E. Campbell, who was one of several African American canal boat captains who worked on the Morris Canal. Born in 1856, he became a captain at only 15 years of age and after marrying in 1878, had 8 children. In the poem ‘Famous Tiller Sharks’, written by Charles Matlock Hummer in 1956, James Campbell is remembered as being a happy man. In the book; ‘Tales the Boatmen Told’, by James Lee, Mr. Campbell’s daughter, Florence Van Horn, remembers that her father was not only a happy man, but also one who would go out of his way to help others. A separate interview with Isabelle Lenstrohm Mann (also the daughter of a canal boat captain) confirms Mr. Campbell’s generosity. When one of the Lenstrohm family’s mules died at Rockport, it was Jim Campbell who lent them one of his own until they could purchase a new mule in Phillipsburg. Mr. Campbell retired from the Canal Company after the canal’s abandonment in the 1920’s, and passed away in 1932. Recently, the Campbell home has been lovingly restored by James Campbell’s descendents, and it can be viewed on North Lincoln Avenue in Washington Borough, Warren County.

Today is Buzz Aldrin's 89th birthday! Did you know Buzz visited Raccoon Island in 1950. The Lake Hopatcong Breeze reported the following July 22 1950

"The Walter Steenbergs of Coral Gables, Florida,
and Raccoon Island, recently had as their guests
the Aldrin's of Montclair and Manesquan, and their
son, Buzz Aldrin, of West Point."

Wonder if Mr. Aldrin could see Lake Hopatcong from the moon :)

Harris circa 1910-1915. The museum will be open from 5:00 until 8:00pm and there will be no charge to enter the park.
