This parking meter was recently donated to the Heritage Center! It was originally located in front of Edwards Department Store! Do you remember the days Monticello had parking meters? Here are some photos I found with meters in the photos.

It’s great when a single photo can bring you right back to a place in time! So much to see at the Heritage Center! We aren’t open today because of this weather but we would appreciate if you all could vote daily for the Heritage Center and receive a donation from Sedona Staffing. I will post a link in the comments. Thank you! We are trying hard to make the Heritage Center the best experience for the community to enjoy!

Growing Up in Monticello

Here is a great album of photos submitted by Doug Schoon. These photos are of the old George C. Schoon Implement building where Java Jones and the Oasis Salon now reside. Also there are three photos of the old Sinclair gas station that was located where the empty lot now sits where Kim and Go once stood. Thanks Doug Schoon!

The windchill kept Iowans inside this week, away from the snow. But these three kids from Monticello, pictured here in 1958, ventured outside to create a dapper snowman, complete with a top hat and broom. I’m not sure if there’s another place around where you can go for free. Learn something new. Be treated with respect. Converse with like minded people interested in local history. Find information about your family, relatives, classmates and coworkers. Enjoy a complimentary water while you visit. Laugh and not be judged. Tell your own story. Volunteer if interested. Take photos of everything you see. We aren’t selling you a single thing. Just inviting you to visit our community center open to Everyone! Stop in today!

There is a train show in town today at the Berndes Center from 9 - 3:30 pm. Folks come from many surrounding states to this show. At the Heritage Center (Open from 1:00 - 5:00 today), we would like to take a moment and share some information on the rail lines that once ran throughout the state and the town of Monticello. At the Heritage Center you can find information about the Depot, the lines and maps of years gone by, along with many other local history items. We have albums of Deb Bowman’s “Mysteries Of Monticello” series by former students loaded with information of any Monticello topic you can think of! What a treasure! Stop in today and get out of the cold! The Heritage Center is a place for the community to go that is always free to get in! Come and share your stories, Memories and knowledge with others! You never know who or what you’ll see at the Heritage Center! In the last couple weeks we have added four new displays and many new items! We are a small group of volunteers who brave the weather to open the doors for each one of you to stop in and visit. We can’t be anymore convenient, put some gas in your vehicle at Kardes, grab a hot chocolate and a snack then pull around the corner and take a stroll through some local history. Even if it’s for a half an hour stop in and connect with your community. Sit down look through a yearbook, alumni information, cookbooks, church books, old phone books, scrapbooks old newspapers, then pull out your cellphone snap some pictures, tell your own story on Facebook to your friends and family who possibly live out of town or in another state. There is an abundance of information for folks of all ages. What better way to enjoy some good, clean, educational family time indoors this Sunday afternoon!

Are you entertained? Take a half a hour, take your time and look through all the photos I posted today. Enjoy some posts on Facebook with any drama!

This is the last album, number six of six! I apologize for blowing up your timeline. Just thought I’d share some old items from the Monticello Express. They document Memories every week for the community of Monticello. We certainly are lucky to have such a long standing great local paper!

Album number five of six. It’s fun to remember the good times at places you may have let slip through your memories.
