Thompson House, 401 Madison Avenue
Judge Thomas S. Tate acquired the Thompson House, built in Tuskegee about 1850, and resided there until after the Civil War when it briefly became a hotel. The Thompson family purchased it around 1880 and lavishly entertained President William McKinley there when he spoke at Tuskegee Institute in 1898.
During the 1930s, the Historic American Building Survey (HABS) documented the house with drawings and photographs for inclusion in the monumental study of America’s architectural heritage. Thompson family members lived there until the 1970s.
In 1982, Hayes Gilliam of Bowdoin, Georgia, purchased the house, meticulously documented and dismantled it, and stored it for future restoration. Gilliam eventually offered it to Landmarks who relocated the house pieces to Old Alabama Town. In September of 1988, reconstruction began on “the world’s largest jigsaw puzzle.”
The symmetrical Greek Revival house features elegant Corinthian columns and a balcony with intricate cast iron railing. Ventilator covers and arcaded side porches are characteristic of the Italianate style that was popular in Alabama’s Black Belt. Ornate plaster work and a cantilevered staircase combine with decorative finishes to showcase the interior. The HABS records from the 1930s proved a tremendous help in the restoration process. Today, the Thompson House is leased as commercial property and acts as the gateway to Old Alabama Town.

THROWBACK THURSDAYS!

Lucas Tavern, built around 1818 on the Federal Road at Line Creek, is the oldest surviving building in Montgomery County. Taverns such as this were located every 15 miles and provided food, drink, shelter, and information to travelers traveling to the Alabama Territory.

Walter and Eliza Lucas acquired the Tavern around 1820. On April 25, 1825, the Marquis de La Fayette, the French hero of the Revolutionary War, spent the night at Lucas Tavern before arriving in Montgomery the next day for festivities.

Lucas Tavern was originally a two-room dogtrot with an open hallway. Later, two more shed rooms were added, and the dogtrot was enclosed. Much of the interior of Lucas Tavern is still original. Lucas Tavern was relocated to Old Alabama Town in 1978, restored, and opened in 1980 as the entrance to the Living Block.

Visit Lucas Tavern at 310 North Hull, Thursday-Saturday, 10:00-3:00.

November as National Native American Heritage Month
Paddy Carr
Paddy Carr was the son of an Irish trader and a Creek woman and this bicultural background made him a prominent intermediary between Creeks and Americans. He was only nineteen when he accompanied the Creek chiefs to Washington serving as their interpreter. James Barbour, Secretary of War, believed him to have “a quick perception of the human character, which enabled him to manage and control the Indians with more success than many who were his seniors….” He often added clarity and enthusiasm in his interpretations.
While in Washington, the Creeks were hosted by Thomas McKenney, the head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. He had famous portrait artist Charles Bird King create an image of each of the visiting Creeks dignitaries, including young Paddy Carr, in their tribal finery. Eventually, lithographs were made from each portrait and widely distributed. McKenney regarded Paddy as a man of “a liberal and generous disposition, hospitable to strangers and kind to the poor.”
Soon after Paddy Car returned from Washington, he married and accumulated considerable land, with large herds of horses and cattle and seventy to eighty slaves. During the removal era, he was member of the Columbus Land Company and a noted speculator in Creek lands, using his talents to further his own economic interests. He and his family left Alabama for the Indian Territory in 1847.

November as National Native American Heritage Month
William McIntosh
William McIntosh was the son of Captain William McIntosh and Senoya. From his Creek mother, he inherited membership in the Wind clan and, as a leading Creek warrior, he commanded the “law menders” or warriors delegated to carry out commands of the National Council. During the Creek War, he led a regiment of Creeks fighting with Andrew Jackson against the Red Sticks at Horseshoe Bend. McIntosh is largely remembered for negotiating the Treaty of Indian Springs, in violation of Creek law, which gave up Creek claims to all land in Georgia. In accordance with Creek law, which forbade cessions of Creek land by unauthorized headmen, McIntosh was executed for treason on April 30, 1825, by law menders dispatched by the Creek National Council to punish the men who had signed the fraudulent treaty.
In 1825, President John Quincy Adams welcomed a delegation of Creek Indians who had been sent to secure peace with the United States and reclaim title to their land which they eventually regained under the 1826 Treaty of Washington.
While in Washington, the Creeks were hosted by Thomas McKenney, the head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. He had famous portrait artist Charles Bird King create an image of each of the visiting Creeks dignitaries in their tribal finery. Eventually, lithographs were made from each portrait and widely distributed. Since McIntosh could not have sat for this portrait it is most likely an image of his half brother Roley McIntosh.

November as National Native American Heritage Month
Chief Menawa
Menawa’s name means “The Great Warrior” and he is perhaps the most renowned warrior of the Creek Nation. Of mixed ancestry, he was one of the wealthiest Upper Creeks prior to the Creek War, but lost all his property in that conflict. He led the Okfuskee towns at the Battle of Horsehoe Bend where he was severely wounded. Following the Creek War, Menawa emerged as one of the most respected and powerful men in the Creek Nation. He was selected to lead the Creek “law menders” who were dispatched to execute William McIntosh after his unauthorized signing over of five million acres of Creek land in the Treaty of Indian Springs.
In 1825, President John Quincy Adams welcomed a delegation of Creek Indians, led by Chief Menawa, who had been sent to secure peace with the United States and regain title to their land. The Creeks eventually regained a portion of their land under the Treaty of Washington.
While in Washington, the Creeks were hosted by Thomas McKenney, the head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. He had famous portrait artist Charles Bird King create an image of each of the visiting Creeks dignitaries in their tribal finery. Eventually, lithographs were made of each portrait and widely distributed. Menawa was 60 when he sat for Charles Bird King.

As a tour guide at Old Alabama Town I meet many interesting people. These four people took a tour with me of the Ordeman Mitchell Shaw house and grounds today. I have to say this group is number one in my book as the most fun group I have ever had the pleasure of taking on a tour. Come join us for a fun afternoon of learning, and living a little bit of Alabama history.
Quite the lineup for this year’s Alabama History symposium from the Landmarks Foundation Old Alabama Town/LMF. We’re honored to sponsor this conversation on the making of Alabama’s 1901 Constitution. Learn how the Constitution’s creation intentionally ushered in 60 years of Jim Crow – and also unwittingly laid the groundwork for the modern Civil Rights Movement.

Tickets are free but required. Get yours at: https://landmarksfoundation.networkforgood.com/events/41421-cultural-crossroads-the-making-of-the-1901-alabama-constitution
I spent the afternoon getting to know this extraordinary couple while giving them a tour of the Ordeman Mitchell Shaw house and complex at Old Alabama Town. We shared history facts and stories. They are on their way to Texas and I wish them safe travels! Come see us at Old Alabama Town. We are open Thursday - Saturday from 10:00-3:00. Hope to see you soon!
