On October 16, 2021 at 7:00 p.m., the Montebello Historical Society (MHS) is partnering with the Angry Horse Brewing for our annual Oktoberfest fundraiser. This year the Oktoberfest will take place at the Angry Horse Brewing located at 603 W Whittier Blvd, Montebello, CA 90640.

There will be traditional Oktoberfest food and Nathan McCusker has brewed some Oktoberfest beer along with his other great beers. Additionally, the MHS will feature its Mujeres of the Adobe exhibit. A very unique exhibit about pioneering Latina women from the 19th century - who lived in present day Montebello.

Please join us at the Angry Horse for some great beer, food and history.

The MHS would like to thank Nathan McClusker for his generosity and interest in the history of our region. We are very grateful given he was hit hard by the pandemic.

Thank you and we look forward to seeing you this coming Saturday.

Chris Vargas,
President of the MHS

As part of recognizing Indigenous People’s Day, the Montebello Historical Society remembers our dear friend -Julia Bogany - who passed away earlier this year. A great loss for her family, community, the Montebello Historical Society, and personally for myself. A generous, gracious person and elder of the Tongva nation in Southern California. Julia was always willing to work with our historical society and provided direction for our First People’s of California exhibit.

We're all sorry to hear of the passing of our friend Julia Bogany of the Tongva Nation yesterday. She was a great teacher of our native heritage and culture. We would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to her family.

174 years ago on the morning of January 9th, after the Battle of Rio San Gabriel, the bodies of Seaman Frederick Strauss, USS Portsmouth, who was killed in action and Volunteer Artillery Driver Jacob Hait, who died of his wounds, were wrapped in their blankets and both laid in the same grave side by side with a small wooden cross on the west bank of the river. A few hours after the Americans have left, they were dug up and stripped of their clothing by the enemy. Fortunately some American visited the spot in the evening and again buried them.

Just received a 48 11" X 14" photo collection from Marni Hougham daughter of Eugene E. Hougham AIA. Eugene was the architect who help with the design and restoration of the Sanchez adobe in 1970. Photos are from 1914 to 1970. Both photos here are from 1940s, note the aerial view has a workers home, chicken coops, barns and the orange grove. Also the adobe was two story and the pouch went all around the building. Backyard view shows the lush ivy, grass lawn and the cement steps and porch. Also the background there is no Whittier Narrows dam. When the dam was being built from 1949 to 1956, it was so unbearable, that Keith Scott and his sister Josephine Scott Crocker could not enjoy there time at the home with all the noise and dust. They called it the "Damned Dam."

Fun ride today.

Today our beloved Taylor Ranch Park was re-opened after a decade of neglect. New features added included a new basketball court, restrooms and new picnic tables. The red barn has been refurbished as well as the pond and gazebo. Fresh new green grass covers the property and new solar lighting poles were installed. #parksmakelifebetter

Hello everyone, we hope you and your family are well and that you've been doing what you can to keep our community safe by keeping your distance, staying at home, and washing your hands.

We wanted to share with the community photographs of Garduno’s (2206 W Whittier Blvd, Montebello, CA 90640). We don't know the future of this place, but know it's past: founded in 1961, the Garduno’s restaurant announced in 2018 that they were officially closed for business.

Feel free to share stories of your memories of Gardunos in the comment section below. I know I personally have a couple fond memories of getting chilly cheese fries after MOB band practice and sharing it with my friends.

Stay safe everyone!

Sincerely,

Originally an agricultural community, Montebello boasted having the ideal climate, productive soil, and an abundance of water. From the turn of the century and through the 1920s, the area was famed for its production of flowers, vegetables, berries, and fruits.

Do you know anything about this "Fig House" you'd like to share? It's located on Beverly Blvd., in front of the Montebello City Hall. Comment below!

Disappointed Sanchez Adobe was closed. Traveled from New Mexico with interest to visit the historic home. Sign clearly read that the museum was open on Saturday's from noon-4pm and no one was there. Wish someone would have responded to emails and phone calls and suggest sign is updated. Relatives of Luisa Archuleta de Sanchez.
