🇬🇧 On this day—July 29, 1981 (45 years ago)—the wedding took place between the heir to the British throne, Charles of England, and Lady Diana. It was a royal ceremony held at St. Paul’s Cathedral and watched by more than 500 million people around the world.

“Here is the stuff of which fairy tales are made,” proclaimed the Archbishop of Canterbury at what was dubbed the “wedding of the century.”

🧚🏻‍♀️ A fairy tale: that is what it was supposed to be—or, at least, what the whole world wanted to believe. Yet, the day’s two protagonists—Prince Charles and the very young Diana (then just 20 years old)—knew full well that this was no fable. Quite the opposite: it was a charade, a piece of theater, the beginning of a tragedy that would have delighted Shakespeare himself. As Diana herself admitted years later, on that fateful day she felt “like a lamb going to the slaughter.”

START I: The day the Cold War began to dismantle

🖊 On this day—July 31, 1991—at the Kremlin, Presidents George H. W. Bush 🇺🇸 and Mikhail Gorbachev 🇷🇺 signed the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START I), the largest nuclear disarmament agreement reached up to that time.

Key points👇

🔹 Each side committed not to exceed 6,000 nuclear warheads and 1,600 strategic delivery vehicles (intercontinental missiles, submarines, and bombers).

🔹 It introduced on-site inspections and rigorous mutual monitoring mechanisms.

🔹 Upon fully entering into force (1994–2001), it eliminated nearly 80% of the strategic nuclear warheads deployed at the start of the decade.

🔹 It paved the way for START II and the 2010 New START treaty, which are current pillars of the arms control architecture.
