The Romans built the whisper right into the word. Say it slowly and your own mouth makes the sound of wind moving through a hedge.

English borrowed it centuries ago for the soft rustle you stop noticing because it is always there. Poplar leaves turning over. Tall grass leaning. The whole quiet engine of a late August afternoon.
