As if awaiting the return of Dr. Best from a house call on his horse-drawn carriage, this Victorian home and medical office captures the elegance of the 1920s. Serving a small-town American community from 1884 to 1991, the Dr. Best collection echoes reminders of a quickly changing era. Civil War, railroad and telephone artifacts all reflect the character of this family of pioneers and visionaries. The expansive and unique collection includes thousands of bottles, automotive memorabilia, clothing and quilts, to name a few as well as the fully stocked kitchen and state-of-the-art medical equipment.

Did you know that you can see an authentic (yes, used) blood letting kit right here in Middleburgh, NY. The Dr Best House is packed full of amazing, and sometimes barbaric, medical equipment. Absolutely fascinating!

December 13 1799 George Washington awoke around 3 AM with a painful sore throat. As the day continued he became increasingly hoarse. Hoping to give him some relief, the General was bled by an employee at and later again by doctors. "A vein was opened, but no relief afforded. Couriers were dispatched to Dr. Craik, (Washington’s good friend), and two other doctors, all of whom arrived soon. Washington waived his usual objections to medicines, and took those which were prescribed without hesitation or remark." Still his condition worsened.

On December 5, 1933, the 21st Amendment was ratified, as announced in this proclamation from President Franklin D. Roosevelt (see photos). The 21st Amendment repealed the 18th Amendment of January 16, 1919, ending the increasingly unpopular nationwide prohibition of alcohol.

The Historical Society thanks Megan Kimball and Matt Coltrain for the design and painting and the Middleburgh Village Crew for hanging it. It is a proud addition to the Railroad Yard of the past.
