Due to the Corona Virus, we will take necessary precautions and postpone the Irish Festival which was scheduled on March 28, 2020. We are not going to rush into the new date until we see how this all works out. We will definitely have the festival in the next several weeks. We need to have the threat behind us first. I will post the updated information on our pages and website.

The Irish Festival s postponed as is this original post .We had no intention of cancelling however it is necessary at this time. We will reschedule as soon as possible.Original post:(The Martinsburg Roundhouse Irish Festival is a go. We are not planning to cancel. It will take place in the Frog and Switch shop. This room holds 1000 people. We will not be in a jam packed room. There is a lot of space. Tables will have plenty of space between them we're expecting about 150 people.
There is not going to be an extremely large crowd. Tables will be spread out well. We have hand sanitizer at each table. With times being stressful with the viruses we feel confident that our venue will be a safe place, and will be a good chance to enjoy ourselves with music and dance. We do however ask that you feel ill please take that into consideration before you decide to attend for the safety of all in attendance.)

Early January 1, 1957, there was a train crash that occurred near North Mountain. Three men died while five others were injured. According to records, the two freight trains collided head-on on number 4 track, which is also known as the “low line.” The accident, according to the Interstate Commerce Commission report, stated that the operator at Miller Tower failed to provide the required blocking protection, and he did not display the red train order signal. Meanwhile, the operator at the West Cumbo Tower followed the same train order and received the clearance form to accompany the order. This resulted in two trains on the same track, which lead to the head-on collision. The crash derailed 43 cars. According to the Martinsburg Journal dated January 2, 1957, “thousands of people visited the site throughout the day and hampered work of the rescuers.” The pictures are from the same newspaper article.

The Martinsburg Roundhouse is one of only sixteen National Historic Landmarks in WV. The roundhouse and the shops are not only unique in architecture but the site also played a major role in "The Great Railway Strike of 1877." The next time you visit make sure to check out the plaque that stands in the roundhouse.
