We're continuing to clean up and renovate the Madrid Railyard, old mining buildings/museum.
We anticipate recreating the museum to both tell the stories of Madrids history, an expand it into a creative artistic space.

We're excited to offer it as an event location!
This spring includes the Crawdaddy Blues Fest May 18th & 19th, and the Madrid Flea Market May 25th.

ALBUQUERQUE, the United States, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- As short as ten minutes, the half-mile long annual Christmas parade in the former ghost town of Madrid, New Mexico, the United States, gives enough joy and hope to its people.

Madrid has endured many fires over the years, this photo (c.1920) is of the "Company Supply Store" building. We believe the Mens Club/Barbershop was located upstairs. This is where the Madrid Boardwalk is located now, with Indigo Gallery, Belle of the West and Jezebel's.

Photo- Coal Miner Family in Madrid c.1930

"Homemade hooch was common in Madrid and widely available, as its production was a means of augmenting your sometimes meager salary.

One of the Greeks, Emile Zeni, was known to make the best bootleg whiskey in Madrid. Christmas dinner wasn’t quite complete unless you had a bottle of Zeni’s best on the table.

Many families made their own “Choc” beer – quickbrewed Choctaw beer – in the absence of hops, bittered with whatever was at hand, sometimes orange peels but frequently with tobacco.

Drunkenness was rife in the mines, some miners known to be drunk all the time, before, during and after every shift. A number of the frequent mine accidents were directly linked to inebriated operators.

Many houses kept a potted marijuana plant on the sunny side of the porch or in a window, for medicinal purposes, a specific for women’s complaints.

The Madrid Opera House was pool hall-dance hall-bar-church movie house (15 cents expensive!) that thrived c.1920-1950.

Music for the dances, parades and other events, as well as for entertainment, was provided by the people of Madrid. Most denizens had some musical talent.

The Opera House was also the venue for regular prize fights, a ring being set up inside, and bets being made everywhere. Information courtesy Bill Baxter.

MADrid...Here at the museum we have studied extensively into the correct way to pronounce Madrid ( relating only to this small coal mining town.) Many people have Spanish ancestors here, and no doubt they did pronounce the town as they do in Spain. However the town was not founded by Spanish colonialist or peoples. Before it was it was called MADrid, it was called several Anglo names such as Coal Gulch. We have interviewed many Madrid Old Timers, Hispanic and Anglo... as well as researching documentation. The consensus from all these people was that it has always been called MADrid. If someone has proof otherwise, we'd certainly like to look at it! We have tried earnestly to be correct.

KMRD 96.9FM Madrid Community Radio

KMRD 96.9FM Madrid Community Radio

Did you know that KMRD broadcasts from the old wood shop from Madrid's coal mining days? Through a collaboration between The Mine Shaft Tavern and KMRD volunteers, the building has been renovated to house the station's studio, music library, office space, and a future recording studio! We thank the Mine Shaft for offering us the opportunity to rent this historic space in the heart of Madrid.

The Madrid Railyard doesn't look like it does in this picture any more (lefthand bit, below the tipple) - much activity and update has brought new energy to old buildings. The Railyard Amphitheater is currently host to Body & Soul, an ongoing series of classes and workshops in movement, meditation, and motivation, and will be where the upcoming inaugural Madstock festival will take place. (Event info in comments.) You can find the full schedule of events at the tavern, cantina, and amphitheater, as well as information about the museum, here: www.themineshafttavern.com

The radio station is not currently open regularly for visits or tours, but you can visit our website, www.kmrd.fm, for more information, or contact [email protected].

Tune in, as always, at 96.9FM or online at www.kmrd.fm/listen. We appreciate our community of listeners and supporters!
