Heritage Village at Mackinaw

Heritage Village at Mackinaw Mackinaw City's Heritage Village lets visitors explore life in the Straits of Mackinac as it was in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. The Mackinaw Area Historical Society (MAHS) began with a dream followed by a meeting on July 22, 1996, which was described in the minutes as "an informal meeting of people in Mackinaw City who are interested in starting a Historical Society."

From that simple beginning, MAHS was born. The "Articles of Incorporation" were filed by August 21 of the same year. Shortly thereafter the Internal Revenue Service granted tax exempt status to the fledgling organization. This determination and "get at it" attitude have been the hallmarks of MAHS in the ensuing 15 years. In the first years of the 21st century, sitting on a porch overlooking the St

Reminder: Today is the last day to stop in to the lighthouse for the 2021 operating season. We are offering free tours so it’s a great day to visit if you’ve never been up the tower! We are open from 10-5 with complimentary doughnuts and cider while supplies last. There are pumpkins to paint for kids and a gorgeous view for everyone to enjoy.

Open Jam Alerts for Sunday August 15th from 1-4pm Heritage Village at Mackinaw Pavilion. Info on Sunday's line up from Dan House. Thanks to the generosity of the Heritage Village folks, the acoustics in the chapel certainly brightened the dampened spirits of the five brave souls that played last Sunday! The wind and rain weren’t as bad as anticipated but it was a treat to experience the natural reverb of the chapel space. The weather for this Sunday looks clear and sunny so we will return to the pavilion unless you receive an updated email. I had some strange dreams the last couple of nights that involved multiple locations but I awoke with a firm suggested theme for our next gathering… GEOGRAPHY… Mull that around because the options seem endless and next to impossible to chose just one…. When in doubt, remember, this land is your land… 🥸 Lastly, we have been asked if we would like to participate in the Heritage Village holiday gathering which will likely occur the first Saturday of December in the chapel. Unclear as to content and format at this point but leading some seasonal sing-alongs are probably in the works… I’ve agreed “we” would be open to this but I need an idea of who “we” might be. Please let me know if you are interested and I’ll work out the details with the Heritage Village event planners as things develop. Stay well, stay in tune, stay the course...
Open Jam will be back Sunday from 1-4pm Heritage Village at Mackinaw under the pavilion with Dan and Friends. All are welcome to attend and bring an instrument or come and enjoy the music. Here is a message from Dan on Sunday's theme. The weather looks amazing for Sunday. I'm personally NOT planning to bring a blanket, down jacket, or mittens this time... especially mittens... my playing is bad enough already without that handicap. Group discussion led us to suggest the theme for the rest of July be "personal favorites" - tunes (instrumental and/or songs) that resonate with you at some personal level. Tell us what about the covers and/or original compositions/songs made you choose them to present. This is one way we all learn from one another! Last session included some of this type of insight and helped make the music more personal and meaningful. Again, it's optional but all you have to do is say something like "Hi... my name is X and I learned this tune because (fill in the blank)." Bear in mind, some of last session's stories about the tunes were delightful! We may also briefly discuss ideas for creating a library of common tunes to share and access so if you have suggestions on this topic, bring them along. Hope to see you all Sunday... Stay well, stay in tune, stay the course...

Heritage Village at Mackinaw free Outdoor Open Jams start this Saturday (May 29) at 1PM and will continue through the summer. Enjoy the music and add to the the music if you wish. Photo by AM.
We will be resuming the Sunday afternoon Heritage Village at Mackinaw outdoor open jams when the park reopens the end of this month. Our first open jam will be at the pavilion on May 30th from 1 to 4 pm. The following Sunday (June 6th) the Grandmother Moon Drummers will be meeting there. The drum group will meet there on each first Sunday of the month and the open jams will be in session all other Sundays unless special circumstances dictate a change. For those of you still interested in this activity, please RSVP so we have a reasonable estimate of interest. If you have suggestions or positive criticisms that may help improve this year’s activities, please feel free to express your ideas in your responses. For those of you who participated in the dulcimer workshops, and for anyone who might be inclined to learn to play a mountain dulcimer, please also respond so we can determine if there is enough interest to reinstate this forum as well if and when a suitable health-conscious location, time, and place can be arranged. Again, if you have suggestions or positive criticisms to improve this type of activity, please feel free to share your ideas. Lastly, if you know of others who may also be interested in either of these activities please pass the word and ask them to respond as well so we can gauge the level of interest in the community to resurrect and continue these types of activities. Respond via email to [email protected]... Stay tuned...

This 35th day of Local Art Inspiration comes from Donna Watkins from Bliss. Donna is a former teacher from Pellston Public Schools and an active member of the Bliss Bunch quilters. You may have seen her at Heritage Village at Mackinaw during festival time. She is always in the church working on a quilt. Here is her inspiration in her own words. "I had always wanted to make a quilt and never had time when I was working. When I retired I took a few classes and have been at the relaxing hobby ever since. You get a nice finished product to give away."
