The J.C. Ayer Lion made his annual re-appearance today. One of the most impressive works of art in the cemetery, it is the most visited and most admired of all the sculptural works here in the Lowell Cemetery. This large than life Italian marble sculpture was completed by Sculptor Price Joy. The design is not copied from any other statue. In 1880, is cost $20,000.00, a very large sum at the time.

06/22/2017

On this date in history, President Roosevelt signed the GI Bill which provides broad benefits for Veterans of World War II. This legislation was introduced by Congresswoman Edith Nourse Rogers. Born in Saco, Maine on March 19, 1881 she married John Jacob Rogers, a Harvard graduate in 1907. Mr. Rogers was elected to Congress in 1913. After his death in 1925, she was urged to run in the specail election to fill his seat. She won the election in a landslide and became the sixthwoman elected to Congress.

Edit Nourse Rogers sponsored many bills that were military related. In 1941 she introduced legislation to create the Woman's Army Auxiliary Corps. Due to the escalation of World War 2 she introduced more legislation to change the WAAC to the WAC (Woman's Army Corps) and it passed Congress. She singlehandedly created the WAC and opened the Army to women.

After World War 2 was over Edith helped write and co-sponsored legislation known as the Serviceman's Readjustment Act, which provided educational benefits, low-interest loans, and unemployment benefits for Veterans. The legislation was the begining of what we now know as The GI Bill. Edith is often referred to as "The Mother of the GI Bill". She is interred here in the Lowell Cemetery.
