Two questions: Can we direct the glaze flows through channels and cuts? Yes, we can! Lots of design elements we can use to take advantage of that. And are we happy with the glossy 2 glaze combo in contrast to the matte glaze of the base glaze? We think we can work with that. Form, clay, glaze, and design elements are starting to come to light.

Oooh! We tested first for what varying thicknesses of the glazes did in the kiln. A thick coat of glaze 1 with a thick coat of glaze 2 created more color and movement of the glaze. A thinner second coat gave us more "starry floats". Notice how they mimic the rim's line. Self decorating pottery! We can use that idea when forming pieces.

New clay, new form, and some variation of a new glaze combination! We're definitely inspired by some aspects; the way the glaze pours out of the parchment paper and decorates the base with alluvial fans of color. Love the subtle colors where the glaze pulls from the rim changing from glossy buff into a soft pink. Notice the starry "floats" at the rim. Now to create forms that allow for these elements ON PURPOSE!

In 2024, we experimented with "Parchment Paper" forms; using sheets of clay to form unexpected folds. We're playing with that idea in 2025. How much parchment? What forms? How will the glaze be affected? What forms best compliment the folds? Lots of places to go with designs! Any suggestions?

New clays and new forms suggest new glazes! This is always a tricky process. The clay body, the glaze formula, the application of the glaze, the firing temperature, & firing procedure all affect how the glaze(s) will look coming out of the kiln. It takes more than one test firing to settle on a new look. We will fire test #3 this weekend.

We've been quiet, but we've been busy! New clay bodies, new glazes, & new forms have been developing in the studio. Testing out porcelain clays for our forms. Each clay works differently & has something to teach us. Aspen by Rocky Mountain Clay will be a part of 2025's offerings.
