Some artists you find. Some find you.

Mark saw Oskar's work at an art fair for emerging artists and that was it. We went straight to the studio. And the studio did not disappoint.

Oskar is one of the most phenomenal painters I have come across in a long time. His practice moves between beautiful figurative work and landscape, and then his protest pieces, which are what he is most known for. Rooted in Mexican politics, in uprising, in what it means to push back against the establishment. He is punk rock and anti-establishment in the best possible way and it shows in every single piece.

The range is what gets you. Quiet and tender in one work, urgent and confrontational in the next. Both completely and unapologetically his.

I did not know what to expect walking into this one. And that is exactly what made it so good.

The Stoschek Foundation show was installed inside one of the old theaters downtown, and the space itself became part of the work. It was a private collection built entirely around digital works and poetry, and the way they took over that theater was absolutely magnificent. Completely unexpected.

What got me was the range of it. Works going all the way back to the late 1800s, what would have been moving pictures and experimental film at the time, all the way through to Doug Aiken doing a full room installation that took over one of the most spectacular spaces in the theater. I walked in knowing nothing about the artist and left thinking about the whole thing for days.

There is something about digital work in a theatrical space that creates a completely different kind of attention. You are not just looking at the work. You are walking through a narrative of poetry and image that keeps shifting around you.

Art collecting starts with a question most people are afraid to ask.

I have spent decades in this industry and the number one thing I hear from people is I would love to start collecting but I don't know where to begin. The art world can feel intimidating from the outside. It doesn't have to be.

So we are starting something new. A series with no jargon and no gatekeeping. Real answers to the questions people actually have. I can tell you right now that the most important thing an advisor brings is not just knowledge of the work. It is knowing how to navigate a global market that is constantly shifting, and knowing how to build something cohesive that actually means something to the person who lives with it.

That is what this series is about.

If you caught Laura's work in our women-led galleries post, this is the deeper look.

Laura Hernández is a Mexican contemporary artist based between Mexico and Europe, forty years of practice spanning painting, large scale installation, sculpture, light, sound, and video. Everything she makes comes from the same place though. Mythology, philosophy, Mexican cultural symbolism. The big questions about love, pain, nature, and human existence, built into environments you don't just look at, you feel them.

I spent time with her in Mexico City and she is exactly who her work says she is.

Mark built Tailgate Alaska from nothing. A backcountry festival in Thompson Pass that ended up bringing over 6,000 people from around the world to the Alaskan mountains every year. Skiers, snowboarders, filmmakers, a whole community. It's where the Northern Aspects film festival originated.

Northern Aspects honored him for everything he created there. He didn't know it was coming. Sometimes that's just how the best moments happen. xx Wendy
